Ashley leaned her head against the cool window, staring out the misty glass at what would be her new home. Home. Such an overrated word.
The subway car rattled as it ground to a stop, shaking Ashley from her thoughts. The doors hissed open, and she adjusted the straps on her backpack, and picked up her duffle bag, slinging it over her shoulder.
Ashley stood, walking out of the compartment and onto the platform. A cold drop hit her neck. It was raining. Brilliant.
Grumbling, she pulled the hood of her jacket up. At least her apartment wasn't too far from the station, considering.
A little while later when Ashley reached her apartment, she fumbled with the keys for a moment before finally getting the dumb door to unlock. Good criminy, it was cold.
Unlocking it, she walked in, shutting and relocking the door behind her. In the dim light filtering through the livingroom curtains, Ashley spied a small pile of cardboard boxes stacked in the livingroom area.
Good, they got here, she thought. Ashley went down the hallway to a back bedroom. Hers. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had a bedroom to herself before, let alone an entire house ( in a manner of speaking). She flipped on the light switch, blinking at the sudden brightness, and tossed her bags onto the bed. Ashley had been lucky to find an apartment that came with furniture, otherwise, she thought wryly, she would've been sleeping on the floor.
Going over to a small vanity dresser, Ashley slipped a slim, crinkled envelope from her jacket pocket. Setting it on the dresser, she brushed a thumb over the red-gold embellished lettering on the front.
