The large metal door creaked and echoed as they were swung open. Jack was escorted into the large room, the walls were white with one wall having a one-way mirror imbedded in it. Jack looked into the mirror, his reflection staring back back at him but he knew that Charlotte was behind it, hopefully looking into his eyes.
The officer sat Jack down at the table and uncuffed his hands. After a few minutes a tall dark haired man with a detective badge hanging around his neck walked in, Jack’s lawyer trailing behind him. The detective sat across the table while Jack’s lawyer found a seat next to Jack.
The detective set down a folder and opened it; inside the folder were a lot of papers and a few of blurry pictures.
“Mr. Porter, my name is Detective Ben Sieroto and I’m guessing you know why I’m here?” Detective Sieroto said as he charismatically looked at Jack.
“Actually I haven't been told much” Jack replied matching the detective’s tone.
Detective Sieroto pushed some of the pictures towards Jack.
“Well I have some evidence that I want to ask you about, Jack.” Ben said.
“Ask away, I don’t have anything better to do” Jack responded as he glared down at the pictures.
“Okay...do you recognize the location, vehicle, and man in this picture?”
Jack studied the pictures although he had already seen them in the folder that Nolan had given him.
“Well that looks like the BP off of 27...that is my truck and…that is Aiden Mathis” he responded slowly pretending that he didn’t already know all the answers.
“It sure is, isn’t it? And if you look at this DNA analysis it also say’s that Aiden’s DNA was found in the stitching of your steering wheel and seat. Can you tell me why Aiden Mathis was driving your truck?” the detective seemed hopeful for answers.
Jack acted as if he was pondering and thinking back, he then let out a sigh.
“Back in October, Aiden told me he needed to borrow my truck to pull a trailer” Jack said as he looked at the photos and papers.
“Seems like a nice favor to do for a man that I am told you didn’t like very much” the detective pressed.
“I didn’t like Aiden, to be frank I thought he was an ass. But my good friends Emily and Nolan were close to him so for their sake the least I could do was be civil with him” Jack responded sharply.
“Well don’t you seem like a stand-up guy? So why did him borrowing your truck require you to leave early?”
Jack’s lawyer cleared his throat to interfere but Jack waved him off.
“He said he needed it before I got off work and that he didn’t want to leave his lexus just sitting in the dock parking lot, so I told him I would leave early and he could leave his car at my house… Listen I know what you’re getting at but Aiden was a good man and I don’t think he would do this” Jack responded confidently.
“So are you saying you did it?”
“No” Jack could tell that Detective Sieroto was trying to get him to slip up, “I’m just not going to pin it on a dead man that I don’t think did it”
The detective looked at Jack slightly puzzled.
“I think I’ve gotten all I need” Detective Sieroto said as he stood up and walked out of the room, leaving Jack to wonder if the charade was good enough.
