"Heath, It's me again. Im currently on my way to Myra's school. I waited as long as I could for you. I don't want her to be late. Ill take pictures for you." I huffed into the phone as I left Heath the 5th voicemail this morning. We had plans to take Myra to her first day of preschool together. Its a big moment. But he isn't answering his phone. I tried.
"Mommy?" I hear from the backseat of the car. I look in the rearview mirror and saw my baby girl watching me.
"Yes my love?" I said with a smile which made her smile.
"Why is daddy not coming?" She asked as the smile fell from her face.
"Daddy is sleeping babygirl. How about I try to wake him up and he can come with me when I pick you up and we can go get dinner together and talk about how exciting school is going to be?" I said trying to make it sound more exciting than it was so she would be excited and have fun today. I pulled up to the school and got Myra out. I had previously met her teacher. Her name is Miss K. Her last name is foreign and she didn't bother teaching others how to pronounce it especially preschoolers. I snapped a few pictures of Myra before she went towards the classroom. I watched as Myra shyly made her way into the classroom. I smiled and took a few more pictures and blew her a kiss. She caught the kiss and placed it in her pocket for later. This was a trick Uncle Elton taught her. She saves the kisses for when she misses us. Its actually adorable. I made my way back to my car. I looked at my phone and saw I had missed 3 called from Heath. I rolled my eyes and called him back.
"Hello hello?" He said in a panic.
"What the hell Heath?" I asked in a disappointed voice.
"I know I know. Maddy I will make it up to her I promise." He pleaded.
"Well I told her I would try to get you to come with me to pick her up and we all can go get dinner. Does that work for you?" I asked.
"Well. Uh." He was hesitant.
"No its fine Heath. I will just send you the pictures. We can try to take her Kindergarten together next year." I said as I rolled my eyes and pulled my phone away from my ear and was preparing to hang up when I heard say something. "What did you say?"
"Look, I know I messed up but thats no reason to be mad at me." Heath pleaded again.
"Heath, you promised her you would be here. You should of seen her face when she asked why her dad isnt here on her first day of preschool. Im only mad because now I have to make our daughter happy when all she wants is her dad."
Heath sighed. I hear a faint girls voice. A familiar voice.
"Okay Heath. Heres the deal. Im picking her up in 2 hours. You can either be here or not. That is up to you. But Paige can't be here." I said as I hung up. The woman who caused Heath and I to get a divorce. The girl that used to be my best friend. My maid of honor. The girl Heath swore up and down was nonexistent in his life but suddenly is talking in the background on the phone. I swallowed down my pain and drove home. I sat in my car for about 20 minutes just thinking before I heard my phone ring. It was Heath. I ignored it. Almost immediately got a text."Am I meeting you at the school or at your house?"
I didn't think about it. I didn't know if he would show up. Heath is a great dad. But lately his "I promise"s become "Im sorry"s. Something I am struggling with handling because Myra doesn't understand. All she understands is her dad isnt where he said he would be.
I replied to Heath and said he can meet me at the house. I decided to go inside the house so I don't look insane sitting in my car when he pulls up. about 10 minutes later I see Heath pull up. I walk to the front door and open the door and walk back to the living room.
"Maddy?" I hear as the door slowly opens.
"In here." I hollared back. I hear his foot steps come closer. I look up at him and hes holding a big box. I give him a puzzling look."I know we have to go get Myra soon, but I brought you a few things. Want to look at them now or later?" He said with a poor attempt of a smile.
"Im so confused." I said as I stood up from the couch.
"Its probably something you would want to look at alone. But I also would like to be here if you are okay with it." He said as he looked down at the book and its contents. I had a strange feeling about this but I was also intrigued.
