Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born on the 5th may 1988 in England to a single mother who sacrificed going to university to have her. She began singing seriously at the age of 14 when she discovered she could use her voice to express her emotions. She enrolled at the Brit school for performing arts. In 2006 her friend posted her demo on MySpace and got such a huge response that she was offered a recording contract with XL recordings one week after finishing her studies.

Adele is a singer / songwriter who appeals to both teens and older audiences not only because of her powerful soulful voice, but her lyric. Adele didn't intentionally write songs to be popular, for her, writing songs has been " a cathartic experience" ( as I read in Cleo May 2012 ) to get her emotions out after painful breakups. For the world, her songs have become '' a musical therapy session '' ( as I also read in Cleo May 2012 ).

Adele has released 2 albums, both named for the age she was When they were released. '19' her debut album, was released on 26/1/2008 which she followed up with '21' which was released on the 24/1/2011. Both albums were about devastating breakups. For her upcoming album she has said ''I can't write another breakup record. People will be like, ok, shut up. I've Had enough now. Cheer up love! ( as I read in Cleo May 2012 ). '19' hit number 1 in the charts and had since gone 6 times platinum. '21' has sold over 20,000,000 ( 20 million) copies world wide and has hit the number 1 spot in 26 countries.

Adele is a soul singer who appeals to the pop market. She has a unique voice which has been classified as a contralto- the deepest female classical voice with the lowest range. Adele has several techniques in her songs which directly affect the listeners Mind and emotions. She incorporates a lot of ornamental notes in her music which are simular to appoggiaturas- notes clash with the melody just enough to create a dissonance or lack of harmony. This technique creates a tension in the listener which is only realized when the tune returns to the normal melody. This Is emotional tension which can be very intense for the listener. According to

Dr. Robert Zattore of McGill university " music floods the brains pleasure and reward centers with dopamine- a chemical in the brain associated with pleasure. When several appoggiaturas are played in succession - it takes the listener on an emotional journey which can result in chills and tears.

Adele has made several official video clips which reflect who she is as a singer and what she is singing about. Several of her videos are in black and white and look subdued, which makes the audience think of the pastand of memories - Adele's memories, in one video clip she walks the streets of Paris ( ironically the city of love ) her face sad as she sings honestly from the heart. In another video, it's filmed in an abandoned house ( just like her heart was abandoned be love ). The clip as a lot of symbolism in it like this the rooms are empty except for Adele who sits alone in one room, the drummer who sits under a light near the stairwell and a room full of glasses filled with water which pulse to the beat of the drum; another room is filling with broken white crockery as it is smashed against the wall to the beat and the light above the drummer which also pulses. The broken crockery is like the pieces of her heart which are in pieces. This particular video is in color but maintains Adele's style and artistic colour flair in all her videos Adele wears classic garments and coats which speak of style and dignity- she is "not interested in being a skinny minny who shows too much skin." as I saw on a 60 minutes video

Adele does not have an official band with a name, but a group of musicians who tour with her

These include:

Ben Thomas- guitar

Tim Ver Der Kuil - guitar

Miles Robertson - keys

Sam Dixon - bass

& Derrick Wright - drums

' someone like you' is a grandiose ballad which was released in 2011 and is from the album '21'. The sone contains 20 tear Jerker phrases, 18 of which contain appoggiatura write create the tension followed by The pleasurable release of dopamine in the brain of the listener. Phrases such as:

" never min I'll find some like you "

"I wish nothing but the best for you"

"sometimes it hurts in love but sometimes it hurts instead".

Adele's first and second albums were written to help get over 2 different relationships that broke her heart. In fact in a 60 minutes interview that I watched, she explained that she uses a drunk journal to help her write her songs. When she was sad and drunk because of the break up, she wrote pages and pages of all her emotions and feelings.

When she was sober, she used these raw emotional ideas to write the songs we all know and love from both albums.
