The cars began to burn out as their drivers put the pedals to the floor. Blue smoke flew from the track, making a cloud so thick it was hard to see through. The smell of burning rubber and exhaust gases filled the air,the sounds of the ultra modified high performance engines mixed to make a cocktail of a sound that made my scales want to crawl off the skin underneath them and hide some where. My ears spiked straight up,not wanting to miss a single second of the deafening roar put off by these monsters.
As the smoke cleared,I saw our Camaro was upfront. Joe's three thousand horsepwer all wheel drive Mustang however, snaked through the other cars and quickly closed in on our own 1,200 horsepower monster. Alex and Joe were side by side as they began to brake for the first turn. Joe slowed to about 78 miles an hour, while Alex, being the 21 time LeMan's winner that he is,drifted trhough the corner at nearly 120. Joe made up for his lower cornering speed by putting the pedal to the floor of his Slaeen and quickly making up his lost distance on the straight away before the next turn.
I watched as Alex upped his speed, downshifted, and gave the steering wheel a yank, turning the entire car sideways and drifting again. Joe slowed a bit and down shifted, before cutting into the corner and stamping on the accelerator to make up for his lost time. As of now,Alex was first,Joe second,Ross was third and the big 69 camaro was third. There was a long straight away now,if Joe was feeling extra crazy,he'd put all of his 3,000 horses and 1,276 foot pounds of torque to the track and leave Alex behind. That's exactly what he did. His Mustang gave off a loud roar that I could hear in the stands and in the helmet cam view on the big TV screen, his Mustang took first place. Joe was doing nearly 200 miles an hour as the third turn approached. I watched as he down sifted a few times, before turning his car through the corner and accelerating again as Alex drifted through the corner and began closing the distance.
"Alex will never win",Jack said,"that Mustang has too much power, too much handling and a driver that knows how to use every bit of it."
"So that's it?",DJ said sounding annoyed,"not even one lap down and your already certain were going to lose?"
"He's right DJ",Josh said,"Joe can drive that freaking Mustang like he's a LeMan's driver."
"Alex is a LeMan's driver",I said,"he's won 21 times,i think he can drive our little 1,200 horsepower camaro." Shelby held me close to her as the race went on.
Alex and Joe were approaching the fourth turn,Joe began his usual downshift while Alex began his drifting routine. Through the helmet audio,I could hear the driver of the 69 Camaro say something as he went through the corner, but couldn't make out what. As they gunned down the straight away,Morgan made his move. He over took the two Boss 429s,the two 2012 Camaros, the IROC-Z and both sixty nines, sliding into third place behind Alex. I watched as Alex took his fingers off the steering wheel, and then replaced them one at a time, like how you tap your fingers when you get annoyed with someone. He shifted into fifth gear and quickly overtook Joe's Mustang. Alex slowed a bit and went through the corner before picking up his speed again. The next turn was a wide arc, like what you might find on the NASCAR Circuit or a speedway, both of which I can't stand. Any car, especially rear wheel drive and front wheel drive, would have little trouble as long the driver knew what he was doing, all wheel drive excelled in such a corner as well, which met this corner was anyone's game. Alex went through the corner with his foot on the gas and the steering wheel as far over as it would go.
Joe and Morgan were right behind him and coming strong. Alex then got onto the straight away and hammered it. He flew through turn six with no trouble at all while Joe and Morgan only gave slight taps of their brakes to fly through it as well.
"Wow",DJ said,",Alex may actually have a chance at this."
"He drove twenty one years of LeMan's",I replied,"winning everytime,he'll win."
Alex,Joe and Morgan flew down the straight away. Each was doing nearly two hundred miles an hour as they approached the eighth turn. Brake lights came on,in the stands aways off,I could hear the sounds of popping exhaust from Joe's Mustang as his Hyperchargers wound down with his slowing drive shaft. The three of them went the corner, slowing down enough to share the corner and not wreck each others cars.
They started down a short straight before navigating another speedway style curve and heading for the last turn before Road America's longest straight. Our IROC-Z and the two Slaeen Mustangs started down the straight, their engines growing louder and louder with each second. They gunned down the stretch of track before crossing the finish line. Alex was first, while Joe and Morgan were tied for second. Alex's time was just over the two minute mark at 2:03.198. Joe's time was 2:05.331 and Morgans was 2:06 even. If events kept like this,Alex would win by a hair.
The time for Alex's second lap was 2:02 dead while Joe and Morgan tied at 2:04 each.
The race was suddenly over,Alex's time was 2:00 dead and Joe and Ross had two minute three lap times. The crowd stood and cheered as Alex,Joe and Morgan raced across the finish line and puled to a stop before backing into the pits and climbing out of their cars. My friends and I ran from the stands and pulled Alex to our shoulders. The crowd was cheering as the announcer got over the loud speaker.
"Ladies and gentlemen Alex Miller has taken first place in heat one of the Class R3 Camaro Versus Mustang Rival's Shootout!"
The crowd cheered.
"Next on todays's even list is a BBQ and Autoshow hosted by Koenigsegg, and the track will be open for racing until ten o'clock tonight when the second heat is scheduled to take place,so until then please enjoy yourselves."
