"The soul has been given its own ears to hear things the mind does not understand."
- Rumi
His eyes lingered...not on those lines, but the little cursive line written under Rumi's powerful words.
"what if they are soulless..."
He had been looking at those words for exactly twenty minutes, mere words, but...someone had written this, may be they were not in a good mood, or may be...he took out his pen and twirled between his thumb and index finger...He felt stupid, but still he couldn't hold back,
"Expecting everyone to understand you is your greatest downfall..."
He closed the book and put it again at the same place on the rack from where he had taken it down.

Shravan Malhotra, a student of management, was really fond of poetry. The city library. This nearby library stayed unfrequented mostly, but he loved it. He loved its smell, he loved the sound of turning pages, he loved the constant humming noise from those old fans...
Shravan hastily crossed the road, the grey sky angrily rumbled. He couldn't come yesterday, the project and assignments were eating up all his time.
The old librarian smiled looking at him, Shravan reciprocated mumbling a soft hello. He went to his usual seat beside the large window; the glass pane fogged due to constant raining. He took out his handkerchief and cleaned a portion. His eyes went through the books, and landed on a Lord Byron book. He was about to pull it out of its place, when Shravan's eyes got stuck to a particular book instead, Rumi.
Again he felt stupid, but anyhow he brought the book on the table and opened the intended page...
"Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world.
Today I am wise, so I am changing myself."
And yes thank you.
S.
Shravan sighed loudly easing his shoulders. For a twenty year old he was always mature. When other boys of his age felt joyous watching a football or cricket match, he used to get bored. Even his father used to taunt him, be a man, and stop reading those stupid poems, those are for girls.
Thankfully he never did take him seriously, or how would have he met this girl! Shravan shook his head, first of all he didn't meet any girl, and secondly how could he be so sure that its a girl! But something in his heart told him it should be a girl. He laughed again, twenty years and he never had a girlfriend...not even a fling. When his friends would excitedly explain about their perverted escapades; he would silently pray unto almighty for their future wives.
At one point of time he even suspected what if he was an asexual or probably a homosexual. But soon his doubt flew out of his mind as his body started reacting on romantic novels or poems.
His thought drifted back to this S. Why not take a chance! He tore a page from his copy and wrote,
"The universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are."
Glad I could help. Hi S here too.
He folded the paper and put it in the book, hoping to get an answer when he would visit next time.
~♡~
Shravan flipped the pages of the book as if his life depended on it. Two weeks, again he couldn't make it because of his studies. There...There he found a pink paper neatly folded between the pages..."Hi, S. Did someone ever tell you that you are a genius? You exactly know how to lift others sinking soul. Never had I imagined, I would talk to someone like you, who actually loves poetry, as much as I do. How many books have you read? Who is your favourite poet...And yes please don't say Rumi. I already got that one. Haha! Well I talk a lot. So pardon me if this long letter puts you to sleep. Hope you'll reply soon this time, coz I am a very impatient girl.
S.
PS: I love your handwriting girl."
Girl! His eyebrows touched his hairline, as happy he was to know that his hunch was right but at the same time; she thinking him as a girl hit him hard.
He stormed down, "Hi, I am sorry for being this late, was weighed down with assignments and projects. I am an MBA student. Reading poetry is one of my hobbies. My favourite poet...well, you already know about Rumi, I love Neruda, Byron, Keats ...oh the list is never ending.
I am not very talkative but I can be all ears if you want to share...well, anything. Btw what do you do S?
PS: I am not a girl.
S."
He smiled, imagining how would be the expression on S's face after knowing he was a boy. But he secretly hoped, she would reply after knowing the truth.~♡~
He laughed out loud, reading the first line..."Oh Sh*t..."
He took time to calm himself down,
"...I am soooo sorry! Actually boys and poetry just don't go together. I mean boys don't read poems na! But I am amazed, you being an MBA student are interested in reading poems. By the way I am a psychology second year student, completely out of your league Mr genius. And you don't talk! How? Management student and not talkative.. wow. So now what are you reading? And if you don't mind tell me more about you, you seem intriguing.
PS: my name initials are S.T."
S.T. ...Samantha, Shikha, Oh there was another girl Shristi...Shravan was writing the names he knew that started with the letter S. When nothing came out of it he opted for the only option that was left, Google and to his surprise there more than five hundred names that started with the letter S.
So he wrote down a single line hoping, she would be ready to share...
"If I am going to tell a real story, I am gonna start with my name..."
-Shravan Malhotra.
