Prologue
I run into my room, bare foot while wearing my pink nighty. I jump up and down as mummy turns to lamp on beside my bed and opens the window, revealing the night stars. She opens my bed covers and pulls something out from under her beautiful red dress that I hope to wear someday, hiding it behind her back.
“Come on, cheeky one, hop into bed” she says. Ooohh bed already?? Daddy hadn’t even gotten back from work yet! Boo hoo!!
“But mummy!” I whine.
“Come on dear” she sighs. I hunch my back and move my way over to my bed. I sit up.
“I’ve got a surprise for you sweetie” she whispers. Surprise!!??
“SURPRISE??” I yell happily. She shushes me.
“A special one…it’s your birthday tomorrow” she smiles. I cross my arms in annoyance.
“Mummy I already know that”
“Yes but do you know how old you’re turning tomorrow?” she asks. I think I do…
“Count with me” she says. She holds up 1 finger, I do the same.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5...6!!” We both say at the same time. She pats me on the back. I still don’t know what the surprise is…
“You’re becoming a big girl now” my mum says while patting my head. I smile.
“What’s the surprise?” I whisper. Mummy whispers into my ear.
“It’s a magical one” a magical one? Ahhh, I want it! I start to clap my hands and jump up and down. Wait...I thought magic, fairies and all that sort of stuff don't exist. That’s what daddy said.
“But mummy…daddy said magic and fairies don’t exist…” I whisper.
“Now, now, we mustn’t say such things…forget what daddy said, you believe don’t you? I know you do” I nod and look at all my fairy posters that daddy shoved away into my Wardrobe of my Mirror. I look at their beautiful wings, the way their flying through the air but never seem to move.
Mummy slowly pulls out a green book from behind her back and shows me. It’s glowing with light. My eyes grow wide with amazement. I jump up and down, clapping my hands.
“Wow!!” I yell happily. Mummy giggles.
“I knew you’d love it…but before we start reading, you must promise me that you believe, that you will always believe” I think she means fairies and magic, in that case I do! Daddy always told me it wasn’t true and that I shouldn’t listen to anything that mummy says about magic because its dangerous... but I never believed him and still don’t believe him. I believe in magic and fairy tales and FAIRIES!
“I believe” I whisper while touching my heart. Mummy smiles and hugs me and then pulls back while pointing to my heart.
“Look!” she says in amazement. I look down and my heart is glowing!
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” I yell in amazement. “Look mummy look! It’s glowing its glowing! It’s magic!”
“No, Rachel, that’s not the power of magic…it’s the power of love, your gift, your kiss, treasure it” she says softly, while moving my hand to my heart. I don’t know what she means by that but I trust her.
“I will mummy, I will”
"Good” mummy says while opening the book to the first page. She reads out the title.
“Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie”
I look at the front cover and there is a picture of a fairy in a green dress with blond hair, I like fairies. Next to the small fairy, there is a boy who is also dressed in green and wearing a green hat. They are both flying through the air in the night sky next to a moon and two stars to the right. I looked harder and there was a girl in a blue dress. Under the title in small letters it says ‘and Wendy’
“Ready to hear the story?”
“Yes” I say, excited.
“….Chapter 1 ‘Peter Pan Breaks through’ …….All Children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy new was this. One day when when she was two…”
Mummy continues to read and I listen. The book is amazing.
“A moment after the fairies entrance, the window opened again and the curtains flew open by the breathing of the tiny stars in the sky watching over the darling’s nursery. Peter Pan flew in and carried Tinker Bell on his shoulder for most of the way. His hand was stained with Fairy dust and he shook it off….”
“Yay he’s going to meet Wendy and they’re going to fall in love!!” I yell happily while making the kissing noises. Mummy giggles. She continues to read, read and read. Suddenly I find myself gazing off, my eyes struggle to keep open and I can’t help but close them while my head touches the pillow and while I hear the relaxing soft voice of mummy.
Mummy continues to read but stops when she sees me nearly asleep. She smiled and shuts the book and moves my hair from my eyes softly.
“Shall we read tomorrow?”
I open my eyes to find hers and I smile and nod.
“Yes and tomorrow after that and tomorrow after that and after that and after that and after that”
“Okay sweetie” she smiles and gives me a little kiss on my forehead.
“Good night my little fairy, love you with all the little stars in the sky combined” she smiles.
“Good night Mummy, I love you more”
“I love you most” My mum whispers while turning off my lap and walking out.
From that night on, I find myself dreaming of the boy called Peter Pan.
