Had he always been there, watching? Probably. But the boy had been oblivious until now. Spooky had began seeing signs of a supernatural being following him for some time, but he refused to believe that that's what the strange happenings revolved around. He was a good boy.

A Christian, healthy, pure young man, and he had no interest in meddling with things that weren't of God's light. However, that didn't mean the devil's interest lessened in him.

Gifts. He always seemed to leave behind gifts. It was one of the only ways he could get the boy to acknowledge him with something other than a look of fear or disgust on his pale face.  He would find things, old and new, pretty and beautifully ugly, and he would bring them to the boy, like a cat who'd just killed the canary.

The gifts were simple, but held more stories than a book; and all the feeling of a soul. He'd leave them in plain sight, or hide them for a surprise. Taxidermic mice, locks of silky hair, sweet baby teeth, a brooch, a pin, a little flower wreath.  They were things the devil found beautiful, and his adoration was adapted by his redheaded angel.

The angel decided that maybe the devil was a little lonely, so the gifts were allowed to stay, and he even laid out his own, some that one couldn't even touch.

A call of his name, a heartbeat to the ear, the softness of a young boy's voice.

Soothing therapy to the ears of the age-old tormentor, an ironic laugh to the angel.
