Something was not right

Something was not right.
Something was not adding up.

I was currently studying the results of Sarah's blood samples and sadly they were not what I was expecting.
Gnawing on the cap of my pen, I let my eyes wander on the papers, skimming through letters and numbers, until they settled on the concentration of her white cells.
They were low, too low, sign that her body was battling with something, something unknown that her enhanced immunity system couldn't seem to win over.

Usually, when a body suffer from cancer, on the early stages of the disease its immunity system tries to overpower it, raising the production of leukocytes.
For this reason, I was expecting Sarah's valor to be absolutely higher than normal, instead of the actual very low number I stumbled upon.

I closed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose in exhaustion. I had been working on her  exams all morning long and I was getting frustrated.

Standing up from my comfy leather chair, I paced to the coffee machine situated on a small cupboard at my right.I needed a damned cup of coffee, and a strong one at that.
While I was waiting for the machine to finish brewing my coffee, I styled my hair up in a messy bun, tying them with a pen.
Sipping my coffee, I looked around the room, mentally cursing myself for not bringing with me my medical books.
When I had moved here, I had decided to bring only the most important and practical ones, but now I was regretting that decision. Next time I would go to Seattle I definitely needed to retrieve a few of them.

Placing the hot cup on my desk, I sat down, ready to continue my work.
I eyed once more the latest results and, sighing, I moved the numerous papers on my desk to find the results of the previous blood exams run by Dr. Dixon.
I was searching for something, anything, that would help me understand what was going on, but, such as the last thirty times I analyzed them, I found nothing.
Groaning, I closed the folder I had in my hands and rested my head on the very comfortable leathery headrest my chair provided.

Think, Lara, think.
You got this, you know you got this, so focus.

I tried to recollect every single knowledge I had on Immunology and Hematology, trying to imagine myself during college, while I listened fascinated to my teachers talking about lymphocytes, emoglobine and serum.

Maybe there was something preventing her immunity system to function properly..but what? Werewolves aren't accustomed to naturally develop pathologies...

I snapped my eyes open and threw my head up so fast that I could feel the whiplash running through my cervical bones.
Damned sore muscles.
Groaning, I rubbed my neck with my right hand, stretching it on the side, while my brain was running a mile per hour.

Werewolves can't be naturally affected by illness and pathologies, but maybe they can possibly become ill, induced by something their immunity system cannot recognizes and then battle..
Like a sort of switch off for the immunity cells by an unknown factor, that wouldn't let the enhanced werewolf's healing working properly!
