I walked out of my room dressed and ready for school when I noticed my dad wasn't asleep on the couch like he usually is the night after poker. I walked into the kitchen where my mom was at the kitchen table, a cup of coffee in hand and a blank expression on her face.
"Mom? Are you feeling ok?" I asked with a concerned tone in my voice, I got my coffee and sat across from her.
"A-Adam...honey your father is in the hospital." She said with tears forming in her eyes. My mouth fell open in shock.
"W-what happened!?" I asked.
"When he was on his way to poker...he was hit head on by a drunk driver...the car is totaled and your father is in critical condition." She said as she started to cry.
"Mom do you want me to stay home? I can if you want." I say as I stand up and hug her.
"N-no Adam I'll be fine...I'll try to visit your father today if I can before I go to work." She said with a smile, which looked fake to me, and she sent me off to school.
As I walked to school I thought about my dad...the good times...and the bad times...but my thoughts were interrupted by a cars engine. I looked and I saw a girl in a porsche pull up and stop next to me. I recognized the girl though...her name is Amanda Solias and she's the head cheerleader at my school. She looked over the rim of her sunglasses and looked me up and down.
"Hey kid...wanna ride?" I looked around to make sure she wasn't talking to anyone else but there was no one else around.
"Y-you mean me?" I asked and she nodded and smiled.
I hesitated and got in the car...why did she offer to give me a ride anyway?
