Veronica POV:
"... with these citations?" I finish, I look over at Xavier, his mouth drawn open and eyes glued shut. I slam the packet on his chest and watched as he jolted awake. "Really? I'm not rereading it again."
He sits himself up again and kisses my cheek. "One more time, I promise I won't go to sleep." I turn to him and peck his lips, smiling at his smile.
"No." I say as sweetly as I can.
"I'm never going to get through all this." He says as he stretched his arms out and looked at all the work spread across the bed.
"Well if you didn't fall sleep so many times we could be finished with at least a third of everything." He groaned and slammed his head on my shoulder. "Call Abby, she get rid of the finance shit in a heart beat and that's already a third gone."
"It's not just give her the paper and a calculator."
"That's exactly what it is."
"How about you take some energy drinks, ok?"
He looked up at me, slowly considering. "Abby and a monster." He tells me.
"What if she's busy?" I ask.
"I'm Alpha, if I tell her to come here then she'll drop whatever she's doing and come here." He moves the papers off my lap and replaced it with his head.
"Sounds controlling."
"Depends on the alpha."
"Then you're controlling."
"I have you to know that I'm an amazing alpha. They love me."
"You sound like Principal Hopkins in high school. He was better than most principals so he was arrogant and thought he was the best of all, but he wasn't that great and everyone still talked shi- crap about him." I say before opening a file and setting it on his as I looked through the paper work.
He moved quickly to where he could see me, but I didn't make eye contact, I just continued to stare at the piece of paper as if I was reading it.
"I didn't see anything wrong with Hopkins." He tells me.
"Well, yea, you were a quarterback, captain of the basketball and wrestling team and had a 3.8 GPA. He adored you, you were his favorite out of everyone else. Him to you is like you to and whoever you favor out the warrior kid wolf people army thing." I look up from the sheet of paper to see a confused look stained on his face.
"Enforcers." He corrected me as I rolled my eyes. "And I don't think so."
"Of course you don't." I laugh a little, before closing the file. "You're sitting on the throne watching over your kingdom and saying 'looks good, I did well'. You're not walking about, clearly the only thing you do is lead the war instead of sending others while you're at home." I reopen the file with intent of actually reading, but a hand snatched it out of mines for my undivided attention.
"Do you think some of my pack members talk shit about me?"
I cornered my lips knowing he was asking for the truth but doesn't really want to know it. "Yes. Probably a few." I say as I cup his cheek, hoping to make him to feel a little better. "Now let's get back to work."
"But I don't want to be a Principal Hopkins."
"Xavier, you're not really going to let this bother you."
"I know I can be a hard ass-"
"Oh boy." I interrupt already knowing I was going to hear him rant.
"But that's just because as Alpha, I have to enforce all the rules, make sure everything is done on time and right-"
"Which what you should be doing with all this work." I mumble.
"I don't mean to be bad bad. I'm the big bad wolf, I mean to be bad ass-"
"Honey the big bad wolf was a hungry ass hole. I mean think about it." He finally shut up and was oddly ready to listen. "The big bad wolf was stomach hungry, you're power hungry, because you're used to it. But the pigs portrayed as your people-"
"Our." He corrected.
I can't help but smile. "Our people are the pigs, minding their business, and big bad comes along and he blows their houses down and start from scratch, you demand their immediate attention and if they don't give it to you'll 'huff and puff-' and so on." Physically he looks all caught up but I know that he's taking it in slowly. Once he started to nod I continued. "You love your- our people, but you just have a sense of entitlement before you speak to them."
I know the last part went through one ear and out the other, because at some point he started smiling and turned to lean against the head board still smiling.
"What?" I ask.
"I was listening, and I realized..." he trailed on as he looked at me, "you were terrified of becoming one of us even second guessing being with me, and now listening to how much you care about how our pack is treated..." This time I smile as if his smile was contagious. "I can't be upset or distracted by anything else. So even if I am a Controlling King, I got a Passionate Queen by my side."
His lips reached for my cheek but I make them land on my lips, slowly inching our bodies closer to where I'm straddling him, his arms wrapped securely around me. Instantly his lips depart from mine and his hands grip my hips a bit tighter than comfortable. I look at him, confused, as he took a second to himself.
"We can't." He said.
"Huh?" I ask, the immediately feeling stupid as I remember what I asked the doctor to do. "Wait don't get mad." I start as I press my lips into a smile. "I kind of asked the nurse to say something medical about not having sex so you wouldn't try anything." He raised his eyebrows as if he didn't know to believe me, and I just can't help but laugh at how confused he is.
"You're kidding me, right?" My laughter slows as his voice changes unrecognizably. "Caroline lied to me?"
"Only because I asked her to."
"You're never suppose to lie to the Alpha." He kind of growled.
"Yea... but I told her. Me, Veronica. Your match."
His wall broke his tough exterior a little as he smiled. "Mate." He corrected to me still smiling. "And I know, just don't do that again. You might think it's a arrogant thing, but it's a Alpha thing. No member is supposed to lie to alpha, ever."
"What about jokes?"
"Well that's different. Jokes are comedic, entertaining, that's a good use of deception."
I raise an eyebrow. "But deception is still deception."
"Yea, bu-"
"Don't explain. I don't care. Just kiss me."
