10 years after the grand battle between Galbatorix and Eragon, Alagaësia was in peace. Just as the dragonrider had promised the people, dragon eggs were sent to each race. In this instance, we go to the city state of Surda were princess Alyss watches her subjects wordlessly, with love, trying to get a dragon to hatch for them. Each year the guards come to her first with every egg but she refuses to even look at them until every last one of her people gets a turn. Each year at least one person from Surda was blessed with the hatching of a dragon egg but this year no eggs had hatched. This year there were two eggs, beautiful, rare multicolored eggs that seems to disappear into their surroundings that caught her eye.  As the last of the princess’ people passed the eggs that were sent to Surda it was time for the princess to pass.

Her people loved her. She helped the poor the best she could even when she had to suffer because of it. She made sure everyone was treated equally with whatever was happening be it shop, barter, or something out of the ordinary. She would make a great queen if a dragon didn’t hatch for her but everyone wanted her to have one because they believed that she deserved the best because she was the best. All her people watched with hope, that the beautiful, kind, smart princess would finally have a dragon hatch for her.

As she passed the eggs everyone held their breaths in hopes one would hatch. The eggs the princess had been admiring earlier caught her attention and she stood in front of them then carefully picked one up.

Suddenly there was chirping and the two eggs started to crack, the villagers stared in astonishment as beautiful chameleon like dragons started to make their way out of the eggs. The princess stared at the dragons in wonder then the dragons nuzzled her hand and she felt a burning sensation where the dragons' brows had been and there was the mark of the dragon rider.

She was hysterical with joy. A dragon all hers! And two none the less; which had never happened before! She could finally see her idols Murtagh, Eragon, and Arya. No one could understand her obsession with the traitor, Murtagh, but she knew in her heart of hearts that he had no choice in his actions during the reign of Galbatorix. But that was beside the point, right now her only concern was with what to call the little dragons that she had been blessed with. It had to be something…. Worthy…. Of the little dragons and what they would become. She could feel a presence in her mind that gently touched and probed her mind for her name. She gave them her name and the presences disappeared as soon as they had begun.

Now came the hard part; leaving her subjects and heading for Ellesméra. It was mandatory for anyone blessed with the hatching of an egg to receive training from Arya before being sent to Eragon to receive the rest of their training before coming back to protect wherever they were assigned.

Because she was 20 she was old enough to make the trip by herself but with her father sick and her mother passed for years now, she was worried about her people. She called to the beautiful little dragons to follow her and they bounded behind her happy and giddy. They stopped every occasion, as they passed the children to receive pieces of meat and hugs and kisses from them, then bounded once more after Alyss. She paused and let the little dragons catch up to her then tried something she had studied for years hoping to become a rider, she reached out to them with her mind and asked them their gender in hopes of naming her precious dragons correctly.

To her surprise, they responded. The one with the flower like mark upon its brow was a girl and the one with the lightning like mark upon its side was a boy; they were twins they told her. Upon looking at the marks on their bodies she rattled off the names she thought would fit them and asked if they liked them. Lily and Thor. Without answering her Thor leaped up into her arms and licked her face in agreement of his new name. Lily purred around her ankles like a graceful cat.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” she said as she walked back to the castle to inform her father with Thor in her arms and Lily riding on her dress skirts.
