The Seventh Year's Surprise
A Harry Potter Oneshot
The Great Hall was particularly buzzing with the loud chattering of the students who had just sat down to lunch. It was the second last week of school before they broke off for summer, so the conversations were loudly spoken as the students shared their upcoming plans with one another.
Some of them were graduating from their seventh year at Hogwarts this year and would have to permanently close that chapter of their lives and move onto the next.
Two of the soon-to-be graduates were Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood who were both sat at the Ravenclaw table, digging in to a scrumptious lunch. Ginny had taken to sitting alongside her best friend at meal times, more-so towards the end of the year.
A chorus of laughter erupted from the Gryffindor table and Ginny looked over, a smile creasing the corners of her eyes. Everyone was so carefree now that the war was over, the students were free to act like students for once.
“It's nice, isn't it?” Ginny said to the blonde beside her, knowing that she would understand her.
“It's refreshing.” Luna agreed, letting her own gaze flick over to the happy Gryffindors. “We need more laughter and happiness in the world.”
Ginny turned back around in her seat and smiled at Luna. “You're absolutely right.”
The girls ate their lunch and chatted about their upcoming graduation until they had to leave for their next class.
As they made their way to Defence Against the Dark Arts, one of the many classes the Gryffindors shared with the Ravenclaws, Ginny caught Luna grinning excitedly. Ginny laughed as they entered the classroom and questioned her.
“What are you grinning at?” She asked, flopping down in a seat towards the back of the class and watching as Luna slid in beside her. She was desperately trying to conceal her grin, but Ginny never missed a thing. “Okay, what's going on?” She asked with an I-know-you're-hiding-something-from-me expression on her face.
“Nothing, it's nothing.” Luna assured her, her grin appearing once more. “I'm just in a good mood.” She lied.
Ginny narrowed her eyes playfully at her as she watched the rest of her classmates find their seats. Professor Derwent wandered in the classroom just as the last student took their seat, and he proceeded to stand in front of his desk.
“Good afternoon everybody.” He started, his deep brown eyes twinkling at them. He was quite an attractive man with well-kept, shoulder-length brown hair and a broad chest. He was friendly too, and that was hard to come by in Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers.
“Now I know most of you find the last few weeks of school to be quite boring.” He continued, clasping his hands together as he surveyed them all. “And so today, I have planned something that will interest you as well as educate you on the choices that are available to you when you leave Hogwarts.”
Luna turned to Ginny with a knowing grin but Ginny didn't notice. Instead, she raised her eyebrows with mild interest. “I wonder what it is?!” She asked. Her question was answered when the door to the classroom opened and a handsome, well-dressed male entered, a smile on his face.
His eyes scanned the room until he seen her, and when he did his smile broke out into a grin.
“Please welcome back Mr Harry Potter!” The professor said, giving a small clap. The class joined in, Luna clapping the loudest. Harry dismissed them with a polite 'thank you' as he made his way to the front of the class, shaking the professor's hand firmly.
