I groaned and opened my eyes, light seeping through my boring hospital blinds. Two whole weeks I'd been in here, one week with no sight.
Today, I was finally going home!
"Rose, feeling good?" asked Dr Grey as she walked into my room, her clipboard shoved under her arm. I nodded and sat up in the bed, smiling widely. I still had major bruising around my face and chest, but it was healing well. My eye's were healing but nobody could ignore the cut running from my eyebrow to the top of my cheek, the scar that would be left.
"Joshua will be here to take you home," Dr Grey told me as she flicked through my notes, nodding occasionally. I smiled and was relieved to have Josh take me home instead of Vik or Simon.
Simon. We'd spoken once apart from the first night here.
FLASH BACK
I smiled as Vik walked in, a hoodie loosely hanging from his small frame. The older boy had been visiting often, usually with JJ or Josh.
"Hey," mumbled Vik, his face sadder than usual. I didn't understand why until he walked in. Simon's eyes were darker, his lack of sleep shown through the bags that hung from his eyes.
"Hey," I said quietly, my eyes glued to the blond. He didn't speak, just look down at the floor. It was like he didn't even want to be here.
"Are you okay?" Vik asked as he took a seat in the chair next to me. I nodded and gave him a grateful smile. I was healing okay; my eyes were less swollen, but I could finally see.
We fell into silence, Simon standing awkwardly by the door and Vik sitting by my side. I wanted nothing more than to yell at Simon. Why didn't he want to be here? Was I that much of a hassle?
I watched as Vik disappeared out of the room before turning to Simon.
"Did he force you to come here or something?" I asked angrily, annoyed he hadn't said anything to me. Simon looked up and we locked eyes, mine filled with anger and his filled with sadness.
"Of course, he didn't! I wanted to come but when I got here, I blanked," Simon confessed. I frowned and sat up.
"You didn't have to stay silent and ignore me! I was so excited to see you and when I do, you say nothing?"
Simon stayed quiet, his adam's apple bobbing up and down. It was silent for a few minutes before Simon spoke.
"I was so scared. I thought I'd lost you. I walked into this hospital and you looked dead," he whispered, "I didn't know if I was going to lose you. I didn't know that if I fell asleep in the waiting room, I'd wake up with one less friend. I didn't know. And that is so scary."
I didn't say anything as I felt tears building up in my eyes. Simon Minter was standing in front of me, confessing that losing me was scary. How would you react to that?
"It was scary for me too," I breathed, "It hurt knowing I'd never see anyone I loved again. It was excruciating that my last thought was you. Out of everyone in this damned world, and my last thought before I thought I'd died was you."
Now it was Simon's time to be silent, his misty blue eyes on mine, both of us waiting. Waiting for something.
I finally opened my mouth to speak but it was too late, Vik appearing in the door way. I looked at Simon before turning back to Vik and flashing a smile.
FLASH BACK ENDS
Dr Grey wrote something on my notes before smiling up at me.
"Well you're officially no longer a patient at Lexi Grey Hospital, you've signed the discharge patients and now, we wait," she said with a smile. I grinned and felt like I was floating in the clouds.
I was finally going home. But to what?
The second I saw Josh, I screamed and launched myself out of the hospital bed.
"Hey!" Josh laughed as we hugged, my body tiny compared to his.
"I'm so happy to finally be going home!" I squealed once we'd pulled away, Josh smiling. I turned to Dr Grey and smiled fondly, lost on how to thank her.
"I-," I began but she held her hand up and smiled softly.
"Say nothing. I don't do well with goodbyes," she said. I nodded and turned to Josh, taking a deep breath.
"Let's go home."
