Riding through the city with one had on the wheel and the other out the window, he had that subtle smile I saw only a few times before.
Maybe it was the thick synths and loud bass encasing us, or maybe it was how lights raced around us as we past them, or maybe the fact that I was having this moment, something so surreal and unreal.
It felt like I was standing centimeters away from the ledge of a tallest mountain overlooking the most serene landscape, but with no ounce of fear in my body.
It felt thrilling. I felt something. Dare I say, I felt happy?
"Hey, are you okay?" said David as he turned for a moment to look me in the eye, but I was too busy looking out into the massive buildings that we were leaving behind.
"I- I'm good. I'm okay. I- I just can't believe this is happening," I replied as I looked over at his relaxed posture and smooth gaze on the road ahead of us.
I felt safe with him. And as I tried to wrap my head around this all, I ignored the red stains that were still on his sleeves from earlier.
The sirens were becoming fainter, and the blue and red lights grew smaller in the rear-view mirror.
Leaning onto his shoulder, I cranked the music higher. I knew this bliss wouldn't last forever. But for now, we were free and like everything, it comes with a price.
"This is what it feels like to get away with murder," David cooed into my ear.
And with that, I not only feel deeper into his strong arms, but also into the darkness inside me, I've tried my whole life to push back.
