"I'm never nice," Dally said to the redhead in front of us. That's not true. None of what Dally says is true. None of it.

Unless you're laying in his bed at 2 am after you've fucked. Staring at the ceiling listening to him talk about New York. Asking him that question.
"Dally?"
"Yeah, Johnnycakes?"
"Why do you love me?"
It's a dark love. A different love. A "making love in the dark of night with the only light being the moon shining through the blinds" kind of love. A "giving each other light kisses behind closed doors whenever we can find the time in the day" kind of love. A "sweet touches when no one is around" kind of love.
The 1960's isn't the time to be anything but a straight white man. Dally definitely wasn't one of those. I definitely wasn't two of those.
"Well, Johnnycakes. I don't know. I guess you're kinda cute. Not cute like those broads hangin around town. You're cute in your own way. Why am I answering this question anyway? This is fucking stupid."
"Just keep going."
With an exaggerated sigh, Dally continued talking.
"You're real. Nothin fake. Jus' you. And you're sexy. Like when we f-"
"Stay on topic."
"Ok fine. You make me feel good. Like as a person. You make me feel good about my shitty life. If you weren't around, Johnnycakes, then I might've gone back to New York by now. Or maybe Cali. I heard they got good seafood over there. This place is a shit hole, but less of a shit hole with you. Is that what you wanna hear?"
"I love you."
"You too, baby."
It didn't seem like much, but it was so much from Dally. With his body pressed against mine, I fell more in love with Dallas Winston than I ever have with anyone.
After a few minutes of silence, Dally finally spoke again.
"I do love you, ok? You're not some greasy broad I picked up off the streets. You're my greasy broad."
That made me smirk. When I looked up, Dally's golden smirk reflected right back at me.

I was snapped back to reality when I realized Pony was talking to me.
"Johnny, man, you want a soda or not?"
"Uh, yeah sure, Pony. I'll take a Coke. Thanks man." I hated being interrupted from my own little world. I guess I'd just have to wait until later tonight for that little world to come true once again.
