Rima Das’s, Assamese film, Village Rockstars has been selected as India’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars.
The films under consideration included Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, Siddharth Malhotra’s Hichki, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, Akshay Kumar's , PadMan Tabrez Noorani’s human trafficking drama, Love Sonia, Ashwin Nag’s Savitri biopic, Mahanati, Chezhiyan’s Tamil drama To-let, Rahi Barve’s horror-thriller, Tumbbad, Sukumar’s Telugu period film, Rangasthalam, Rahul Bhole and Vinit Kanojia’s Gujarati film, Reva and Deb Medhekar’s Kabuliwala adaptation, Bioscopewala.
The coming-of-age film tells the story of 10-year-old Dhunu, a young girl from a remote village in Assam, who dreams of owning a guitar and forming a rock band despite the abysmal financial situation at home.
The film was shot in Das’s native village of Chhaygaon and most of the cast members are non-actors from the village, including her niece Bhanita Das who plays Dhunu.The film has travelled to more than 70 film festivals around the world. The film has also won National Film Award for Best Feature Film, Best Editing, Best Location Sound Recordist and Best Child Artist.
Rima Das tweeted, “With tears of joy and a feeling of pride, I humbly accept this news. #VillageRockstars is India's official entry for the #Oscars ! Let that sink in.”
