There is pain in every smile.
There is pain in every laugh.
There is pain in every breath,
like a strangled cry in my throat fighting to escape.
You were familiar like the cracks in my ceiling, the scent of my home,
or the pale blue sky of a hot summer day.
But I,
being myself,
only saw the best in you.
I ignored the silence,
the screaming,
the chasing.
I ignored every rational thought coursing through my veins.
But I was wrong.
You were like broken glass,
I still touched you even though I knew it would hurt.
So now I am left picking up the pieces of my shattered heart,
in a tangible darkness I know too well.
