“Hey…Dot.”
Dotty had reluctantly made her way to Cal’s house the next morning praying to the Gods that it wouldn’t be awkward…which it just became.
“Hi.” Dotty sighed.
“Would you…” Cal started.
“Look, I just came to get my phone.”
“I…”
“No, Cal, I mean don’t you understand how awkward this is?”
“It doesn’t have to be…please just come in and let me talk to you. I’ve missed you, Dot. You’re my best friend and I feel like an idiot for what I did yesterday.” There he was again, Dotty thought, giving her the infamous puppy eyes.
“Dammit, Cal.” Dotty said rushing pat him and found her usual spot on the couch.
“Thank you.”
“Just spit it out, Cal.”
Cal sighed running his hands through his hair; a habit he always did when he was nervous. Dotty rolled her eyes at herself; she wished she didn’t know so much about him. He was wearing a usual band tee and loose fitting jeans. She tore her away and glanced at his face. He looked pained and was pleading with his eyes as if to say, ‘HOLY FUCK I AM SORRY!’ This made Dotty giggle. Cal always had the tendency to yell sometimes when under pressure. She was thinking of a time in class once when Cal made a ‘can I have your attention’ cough. She blushed with embarrassment.
“Sorry I was thinking about something. Remember that time in Mr. Harris’ class…” Dotty stopped herself. “As you were saying.”
“No, no. I remember. He made me so ma…”
“Let’s not made this harder than it needs to be, Cal…”
“Right." There was a long pause before he spoke. "Look, you know I’m sorry. It’s just I want things to go back to the way they were. As I said before, I miss you, Dot. Ever since you moved, I hardly see you…or talk to you.”
“That’s your fault, Cal. I call you, no answer. I text you, no answer. Don’t expect me to keep trying if you can’t cope with the fact that…”
“I know, I’m sorry. With everything that’s happened in the past aside, will you be my best friend again?”
“I never stopped.” This made Cal grin the size of Texas. “Now, can I have my phone?”
‘Oh, yeah, you silly klutz, left it on the charger.” Cal chuckled as he went to retrieve it. Dotty looked around the familiar living area and spotted a picture of her and Cal at graduation. She went to it and picked it up, smiling. “Here,” Dotty jumped, almost dropping the picture.
“T-thanks. You scared me asshole!”
“I can’t help it you’re easy!” Cal said, winking.
“You are such a pervert!” Dotty said, lunging for him. For some reason, his comment didn’t offend her. Cal was known for his perverted jokes. Cal quickly jumped out of the way. “Nah, nah, boo!” Cal ran out the living area causing Dotty to pursuit. She heard him topple on the stairs and burst out laughing.
“Hey! You kids behave!” Tanya, his mother, scolded. Tanya appeared at the top of the stairs and soon followed Dotty in laughter. Cal was lying in a heap at the floor cradling his arm.
“Aw, did someone get hurt, poor baby!” Dotty said trying to hold her laughter.
“Whatever.” Cal stated. Dotty moved closer to examine his arm when Cal lunged forward and started tickling her.
“No! Stop! Tanya, help m-m-me!”
“Oh, no, sweetie, I’ve learned not to invade in you guys’ wars.” She said backing away.
“Please! Cal, stop!”
“Only if you promise to stay for lunch!”
“F-f-fine! J-j-j-j-ust, stop-p-p!”
Cal finally released her and was quickly kicked in the shins. “Ow, you little…!” Dotty ran past him and ran to the nearest room shutting the door. She soon realized it was Cal’s bedroom. She slid under the bed just as he entered the room. Dotty almost let out a yell when her hand touched something. Her almost yell turned to an almost gag when she realized that ‘something’ was used tissues. “Gross!” She whispered. Dotty was quickly pulled out from the under the bed by a furious Cal. “You kicked me!”
“You deserved it! And just so you know, please learn to throw away your ‘used’ tissues!”
“A man’s got to do what a man‘s got to do.” He said, smirking. Dotty shuddered. “And don’t forget you’re staying for lunch.”
Dotty sighed, falling back onto Cal’s bed. He did the same. Dotty turned over to look at him. Cal was already staring at her, grinning. “What?”
“I’m just glad you’re here.”
“Cal,”
“Yeah?”
“There’s something I want to do… to prove that I no longer…have any attraction towards you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Close your eyes.”
As he did so, Dotty inched forward, hoping she was right.
<Do you think there will be any attraction?>
