District One
"And the male tribute is..." Effie says before reaching into the large bowl and pulling out a small piece of a paper. She quickly unfolds it and smiles. "Alexander Payne."
Alex freezes as small murmurs and gasps escape the lips of friends and neighbors. Everyone knew Alex wouldn't last a day in the games. His older brother Liam knew that too.
"Alex sweetie, come on. Don't be shy, love." Effie says looking around, waiting for Alex, who was too frozen in fear to speak up. Or even breathe.
Christal frantically looks around and sees Liam walking up to the stage. She slowly lets out the breath she was holding and looks at Alex who was crying because his only family was leaving to the Hunger Games.
"IT'LL BE ALL RIGHT ALEX! MY MOM WILL TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOU! YOU KNOW THAT!" Alex nods and wipes his tears. Then, all attention is back to the stage.
"Oh, there he is!" Effie exclaims clapping her hands.
"Actually, I volunteer." Liam says while smiling at Effie.
"Ah, a volunteer." Effie smiles and puts her hand into the second bowl. "Ashley Pri-" She manages to get out before Christal interrupts her.
"I volunteer!" She says as she runs on stage.
"Oh, well it looks like we have another volunteer." Effie says surprised. Usually the girls don't volunteer but Christal wanted to be with Liam to make sure he stays alive.
"Christal, no!" A voice yelled before a tall, fit man ran up on stage to his sister.
"Christal, you can't do this. Why would you volunteer? What are you? Stupid?"
"Michael, it's fine. I know what I'm doing. Trust me, please?"
Michael sighs and runs his hands through his hair before getting dragged off stage by peacekeepers.
"Hey, I love you. Take care!" He yells to his younger sister.
"Will do, I love you too!" Christal yells back.
"Oh," Effie exclaims. "Young love?"
Christal laughs. "No, I'm his sister." She says at the same time Liam says "No, she's his sister." They laugh for a bit and Effie clears her throat.
"Say hello to our District One tributes, Liam Payne and Christal Greene."
Effie and Liam smile before walking off, followed by Christal and peacekeepers. Christal frowns and mumbles goodbye to her brother. She didn't want to do this. She just wanted to make sure Liam didn't get hurt. She just realized she had feelings for him.
