shawn peter raul mendes.
he smiled brightly, his gorgeous face showing every single emotion in him. oh, how he loved to smile! showing his joy only made him and the others around him happier. his smile was contagious, maybe because it was so real and his words were so raw. he couldn't help it - it still felt unreal that millions upon millions of people loved and supported him with everything he had. in fact, he wasn't sure if he would ever get used to it.
"thank you new york!" he shouted into his microphone, his audience screamed and cheered for his in response - to say thank you to him instead.
the arena was plunged into darkness at his words; the show was now over. when shows like this ended, shawn's face was plastered with smiles. playing his songs (his songs!) to crowds of thousands brought him more joy than money could buy. so when he ran around backstage thanking everyone he saw and helping to put away all the guitars and all of the strange equipment he still didn't understand, it was like he was carrying around a bag of fairy dust and he was sprinkling it everywhere he walked - making it all a little more magical.
shawn hurried back to his dressing room, desperate to get out of the sweaty shirt he had performed in. as soon as he entered, he saw his manager, andrew, on the phone but as soon as andrew laid eyes upon shawn he hung up and stood up to congratulate him. "congrats kid! sold out madison square garden and they all loved you! you know, eleanor kavinsky was here yesterday? oh my god she was amazing, but i think you were better!" andrew chuckled.
shawn smiled at the floor, "no way i was better than eleanor kavinsky - i mean, she's eleanor kavinsky! she's so gorgeous, and her voice is so beautiful and..."
"okay, we get it lover boy!" andrew laughed.
shawn rid himself of his shirt and reached into his worn out adidas duffle for a new one and pulled it on. "oh and by the way, billboard want to do a thing with you, you know the usual. interview and a quick photoshoot. it should take up a day and a half maybe," andrew informed him while scrolling through his emails.
"okay, how long do we have in new york after that?" shawn asked, grabbing a bottle of water and chugging it down.
"so, the billboard thing is tomorrow and after that, we have a week then it's off to toronto for the last show and you're on a break for three months and then we start on album three!"
"that sounds great! i love that!" shawn said, grinning in excitement.
shawn thought he was so lucky - no, he knew he was lucky - that he got to do what he loved so dearly for a living. and to him, the huge salary was a giant bonus. music was his lifeline and the songs he sang were his blood. he loved that he could channel his emotions and his thoughts into his work and because of how real it was, it was loved even more.
"oh and here's something you'll love - guess who else will be at the billboard shoot tomorrow?" andrew smirked, knowing that his news would shock shawn.
"i don't know? hailey?" shawn hopelessly guessed.
"even better, eleanor fucking kavinsky!"
shawn stopped. despite all his fame and the fact that he was invited to every award show and afterparty, he had never met the princess of hollywood herself. through her perfect instagram posts, her clever tweets and songs that told twisted stories of love and heartbreak, he could only understand what her public personality was. the idea of a perfect person fascinated him and all he wanted was the chance to meet her and see the real eleanor kavinsky for himself.
"wait, what?" shawn said, "eleanor kavinsky? tomorrow? no! you should've given me more time to prepare! what will i say to her? does she even know if i exist?"
"calm down mendes! i've got to say that it's kind of funny to see you get this worked up about a girl! so will you finally admit you have a big ass crush on her..?"
"what? no! i just really want to meet her... she seems cool. i mean, she seems so perfect, and i want to get to know her and maybe - uh, you know? get to know her? i mean, perfect people always have secrets to hide!" shawn stumbled on his words, unsure of how to phrase his thoughts.
"well, not you."
shawn almost laughed. he definitely was not perfect. and he definitely had a few secrets that were worth hiding.
