A full month after getting assaulted, I felt good enough to go back to work. The nightmares didn't happen every night, but that might be because of Elliot coming home every night to sleep in the same bed as me. But since the assault, Elliot and I pushed back our want for a child and decided to wait even longer.
"Are you sure you want to go back? I'm bringing in enough money that you wouldn't have to work if you didn't want to." Elliot breathed, as he and I sat in my truck outside of my precinct. I had asked him to drop me off so that when he got out he could just drive over here and pick me up.
"I want to work. I want to follow in my father's footsteps. And right now all I want is to get in there and start working again. I'm behind by a month. After the trial and stuff got over, I didn't even know if I'd want to go back, but now I do."
"Well, I'm glad that you are going back. You have been driving me nuts this past month with all of your cleaning and doing other things stay at home wives do." Elliot chuckled. I smiled, as I looked down at my hands.
"I love you, El. Thanks for supporting me through this all. I feel like any other guy would just up and leave, but you stayed and helped me."
"Baby, I've been with you since we were almost 14. That is like 13 years of us being together, 5 of which you've been my old lady. I'm never going to just up and leave you because I love you too much." Elliot smiled. I nodded slowly as I looked at him.
"I'm going to kiss you now, then head in, okay?"
"Okay." Elliot smiled. I leaned over and kissed him deeply, before wiping some of my lipstick from his lips, before climbing out of the truck. I stood for a long moment, as I just looked at the old brick building.
"Are you going in?" Elliot asked as he spoke through the open passenger side window.
"Yeah. Just go to work." I breathed, and he nodded before blowing me a kiss. I smiled as he drove away, before turning back. I squared my shoulders and took several deep breaths before heading up the stairs and past several officers.

"Alright, so Olivia is going to be here soon. Just remember that she asked to get back into work, and to not be treated as if she had been assaulted, alright? Fin, I need you in my office however to discuss her." John spoke, as I walked towards the doors marked Special Victim's Unit. I stopped in the hall and sighed. Of course, he had to remind them.
I bit my lip as I pulled on my jacket a bit, before walking into the squad room.
"Hey, welcome back Benson." Cassidy smiled, from where he sat at his desk. Across from him sat Monique, and now I was going to be sitting and partnering up with Fin.
"Thanks, Brian. I'm so sorry, Monique." I breathed, as I watched her push some trash off of her desk and back onto Brian's.
"Why are you sorry?" She questioned, as Brian lounged back in his chair and spun a pencil around in between his fingers.
"Because you get stuck with him." I smiled. I made the comment to break the tension that I felt in here, and it worked. Brian tossed a paper cup at me, and Monique laughed.
I sat down at my desk and sat the picture of my father up again, and then I wrote a note on a small piece of paper. I needed to remind myself to grab some pictures from home so I can personalize my desk. I wanted to sit here and see Elliot even when we aren't together.
While I tucked the note into my pocket, my desk phone rang. I looked a shaky breath, before reaching out to answer it.
"Detective Benson, Manhattan SVU," I spoke, and as soon as those words left my mouth, a very frantic woman spoke.
"There is a woman next door in my apartment building, and she's getting beaten by her husband. Please help her!" She cried.
"Alright, I need the address and we will be there as soon as possible," I spoke, before grabbing another piece of paper and getting ready to write down the address.
"362 North Pine Street. Apartment 4H." She cried, before hanging up. I hung up before standing and heading towards John's office. I knocked before opening the door.
"Fin, we got a call. I'm going to call some officers to break up the fight before we get there. Oh! I need my gun, badge, and handcuffs please, sir." I spoke, before quickly heading towards his desk.
"Take it easy, Benson. Don't get brave." He breathed, and I nodded.
"I'm good, we just have to get over to the house before the man kills his wife."
[*]
"Oh geez." I frowned, as Fin and I walked into the apartment. Blood was everywhere, and the victim had died. An ME that I have never seen before squatted next to the body before moving the sheet over her face.
"Hey, Melinda. So what do you think happened?" Fin asked, as she stood and took her gloves off.
"She was stabbed to death. Her husband was arrested and he is getting taken to the hospital to get a hand wound cleaned up and closed up." She sighed, before looking at me.
"Melinda Warner, I'm your ME." She spoke, and I nodded.
"Olivia Benson, it's nice to meet you, but in an unfortunate way." I sighed, and she nodded.
"I'll tell you what stab wound was the cause of death." She sighed, before telling someone on her team to bag the body and that she'd meet them in the van.
I looked at Fin and he squeezed my shoulder.
"Let's take a look around. I'll deal with this all out here, you go look in their bedroom and stuff, okay?" He spoke, and I nodded slowly.

All of the pictures in their bedroom portrayed them as a happy family. As I walked down the hall towards another room, I saw pictures of the wife holding a baby, and several pictures as the small boy grew up. I quickened my pace towards the back room and opened the door.
The room was torn apart, and sitting on the bed was a small backpack, but there was no child.
"Is anyone in here?" I asked, as gently as I could. I walked to the bed and looked underneath it. I saw the bright green eyes of the little boy looking back at me. I sank down onto the ground and laid on my stomach as I looked at him.
"Hey, there little man," I whispered. He sniffled and wiped at his cheeks.
"Go away." He whimpered.
"I'm a cop. Wanna see my badge?" I asked, and he hesitated before nodding. I pulled my badge off of my belt loop before showing it to him.
"Where's my mommy?" he sniffled, as he came a little closer. I reached out and gently grabbed his hand.
"Sweetie, why don't you come out and we can talk." I breathed, and he swallowed hard before crawling out from under the bed. I sat up and pulled him onto my lap. Once he knew I was a cop he trusted me like ten times more than before.
"My mommy is dead, isn't she? Just like my Papa?" He asked.
"She's in heaven, but she's looking over you right now. What's your name?"
"What's your name?" He asked, as he turned around and looked at me. His eyes were full of tears and sadness, and for being so small, he was being so brave.
"I'm Olivia. You?" I mused.
"I'm Christopher, and I'm three." He spoke, adding a very important detail.
"Buddy, we are going to take you to where I work. Do you want to grab something very special that you love a lot?" I asked, and he quickly climbed off of my lap and ran to his bed. He grabbed his backpack and then grabbed a worn teddy bear.
I stood up and hooked my badge back onto my belt loop, before looking at him.
"I'm tired, Olivia. Can you carry me?" He asked, and I nodded.
"Of course, let's go." I leaned down and swung the little boy into my arms. He laid his head against my shoulder and sniffled as he mumbled Mommy.
