The city was never louder than it had been that morning. There was an incredible amount of people commuting back and forth during their busy days, rushing around trying to get their things done before people had to be off to school and their jobs, bustling to beat whomever was directly in front of them to make sure they didn't lose a single minute.
Rye loved being out and about but he never understood the ridiculous amount of rushing he would see people do. If he had a lot to do that day, he knew the easiest option was getting up early and getting a head start on all of his errands. He also tried to be kind and let people ahead of him if they seemed like they were rushing, because he figured it was something small he could do to help out.
Despite doing that, wanting to help people out, he couldn't stand the people who tried to make that choice for him. He hated people who would cut him or others off in line and he made a point to rectify the situation each and every time.
This morning in particular was not the best to pull that, but here he was listening to a conversation happening right behind him.
"Listen babe, I'm in a hurry. You don't mind," a rather short blond said, matter of factly.
Rye made a face, turning around and seeing that the person he cut who had been making quite the protest was suddenly...dare he say, happy to give their spot to him?
Ah.
"Hey asshole, you know she did mind and so do I, get to the back of the line." Rye sternly said what he had to say, locking eyes with the offender.
"It's Andy, andcome on, you won't mind me getting my coffee and a muffin," he tried stepping in front of Rye but he put his arm out to block him.
"The chocolate one?" Rye asked hopefully, knowing it was the last one on display.
Andy looked pleasantly surprised, as if he thought Rye was going to buy it for him.
"Yeah, the chocolate one."
Rye looked behind him, asking what the woman was going to order, she told him she wanted to get the same.
He nodded, ordering his drink and hers, and just one chocolate muffin.
A look of confusion spread across Andy and the woman's face, but it was quickly cleared up when Rye turned back towards them and handed both the drink and the muffin to the woman and nothing to Andy.
"Here you go, it's on me today." Rye smiled at the woman, steering her out of the shop beside him so she wouldn't be persuaded by Andy once more.
Andy was left in the shop completely astonished by what just happened. For the first time in his life since he had gotten full control of his powers—somebody was able to resist, and he was not happy.
The only other person that he had ever known that could resist was his own mother, and he learned that really quickly when he tried getting out of a grounding after persuading another kid to hit himself in the face.
Needless to say it didn't work and Mama Fowler grounded him for three times as long.
This guy today, he had no idea what was going on but he heard that other people with the same powers were immune—so if that's how he did it, Andy knew there was nothing else he could do. It wasn't a matter of his own failings.
That must be it.
