The Golden Flame

Fonix's POV:

"Val?" I ask, after hours of silently sitting in the dark. "Yes?" My sister replied. "Where are mom and dad?" I looked up at my sister Val. I already knew the answer..."They...they are visiting grandmother and grandfather, in heaven." Val replied, her voice shaky and unsure. I could tell she was trying to be calm and not panic. She probably thinks since I'm only ten and young, that I dont fully understand what was happening. But I do. My parents are gone. The world was hit with a huge flaming comet, and we were hidden underground so we would be safe when it hit. I lowered my head. "Mom and dad would want us to move on." I told her. My sisters eyes shimmered with sadness and tears. I hugged her and put my hands in hers. "It will be Okay." I say, even though we both know it won't. Will we be able to go up toe surface of earth again? My sister laughs a little and give me a weak smile. "We will be okay.." She says still trying to sound brave. "Lets go." She decides, her voice stronger this time. We started walking down a dimly lit hallway, until we saw a door which had the words (Welcome Survivor) engraved upon it. Val and me exchanged puzzled glances. Val then opened the door to reveal a room with a TV and six people inside, 3 boys, 3 girls. "Hi, I'm Jonathon!" A boy with rust colored hair greeted to us. "Hi, I'm Valentine, and this is my brother Fonix." My sister introduced. Two twin like boys stepped forward. "Well I'm Jack, and this is Max." One boy said, pointing to the other. I could barely tell them apart. They were definitely twins. "I'm Sheer, and this is my sister Victoria, and Jonathon is our brother!" A girl with blue hair told us, nodding toward Jonathon and her sister Victoria, who had short black hair. Jonathon, Sheer, and Victoria, looked nothing alike, so them being related puzzled me a little. I stared at the quiet girl who had caramel colored hair, over at the window who had not yet introduced herself. I saw she had piercing green eyes when she spotted me staring at her and shouted "STOP!" I looked to the ground. "Um...a-anyway...I'm Phoenix.." the girl said very quietly then. She looked away from the group quickly and back out the window.

"So....where are we?" Val wondered aloud. "GOOD QUESTION!" A woman said, popping up on the  TV screen. We all screamed. "Sorry about that!!" The woman apologized. "You are in the Underground City of Survivors!" The woman began "You 8 have been chosen to survive the mega fire comet known as THE GOLDEN FLAME!!"
"Why us?" Max and Jack asked together. "You are the one's that we're pure in yourselves!" The woman replied. "What the frick does that mean?" Sheer asked. "No time to answer any questions." Replied the woman.
"I'm not going to live in a hole my entire life!!" Victoria refused, with a disgusted look on her face. "Yeah, were not gophers!" Max shouted at the TV. Clearly no one but me had realized that the woman talking on the TV was a recording and started to play when a certain word or sentence was spoken.
"We have no choice!! Are home are scorched with everything else!" Val told truthfully in fact. Everyone was silent. "Fire is still burning. We need to talk in deeper shelter!" The woman said. I knew it was a recording but what she had said was stupid! We would be to Close to the lava! The earths core! We would melt!! From the corner of my eye I saw Phoenix staring at me. I had a sense she was thinking the same thing I was. We looked away from each other.
THE FLOOR UNDER US SUDDENLY COLLAPSED!!!!!!
Everyone screamed except me, I was trying to be brave. But it was getting harder to keep my tears in. I was scared and worried. Scared I was plummeting to my death! Worried I would be separated from my sister! I reached for my sisters hand as we fell. We grasped hands, me and my sisters eyes flashing with panic. So did everyone's. I couldn't keep the worry feeling inside. Victoria and Sheer looked like they were going to puke. The twin flailed and half breathed. Jonathan looked like he was going to explode! Val and Phoenix cried and whimpered. I felt like someone was choking me and banging a hammer on my head. A few stray tears ran from my face. I was 10! I am a little kid it was OK for me to be scared! A 10-year-old should not know every word in the vocabulary, and in the dictionary. A 10 year old shouldn't read 1000 page books every week! But I do!!! My question is why!? "Why can't I just be a normal kid!" I accidentally say out loud. Everyone looks at me and confusion. Val looked at me with great worry. Great! Now she probably thinks I'm crazy! Or I hit my head! Uhhhhh!! "Because your not, none of us are, or be wouldn't be here..." Phoenix whispers.
Suddenly we plunged into a room full of water! When our feet hit the ground the water seem to drain leaving us in a big room soaked! It was actually kind of refreshing. Anyway...TVs and lots of equipment in boxes sat in the room. All the TVs flickered. "Everyone alright?" Jack called. "Yeah...." We all said wearily. "Head count!" Max called
"Fonix!"
"Here!"
"Victoria!"
"Here!"
"Me!"
"Here!"
"Jack!"
"Here!"
"Sheer!"
"Here!
"Jonathan!"
"Here!"
"Valentine!"
"Here!"
"Phoenix!"

...

"NOT HERE!!" Max shouted. "WHAT?!" Victoria yelled. Everyone started to panic and search for Phoenix. I walked over to where boxes tower over me like skyscrapers. Suddenly I slipped! I looked on the ground to see a watery footpath leave behind some boxes. That led to shifting clothing sounds. I turn the corner to see Phoenix going through a box. She wasn't dressed in her dance clothes, she was wearing a black leather jumper uniform equipped with millions of pockets that she was stuffing things in! "What are you doing?" I asked. She looked up at me for a moment in silence. "Well...since were going to be living down here are entire life...I'm getting supplied!" She told me, throwing me a suit and back pack! I changed into the suit and starting digging in boxes with her. "FONIX! PHOENIX!" Val yelled, coming around the corner. "Yes.......?" I said, looking into my sisters eyes. "Where were you two?! You vanished!!" Val almost screamed at us. Phoenix stood, and instead of replying, she kicked at a stack of boxes sending them crashing to the floor. She hid her teary eyes from Val, but I spotted them.
Soon everyone gathered around boxes grabbing suits and supplies! "HELLO AGAIN!!" Said the same woman. Her image flickered on the TVs. This time we just turned in surprise! "Oh good you found the supplies!" The woman exclaimed on the screen. Phoenix smiled. That was new. I liked it...

"Anyway its time for me to explain myself! You 8 were chosen to survive THE GOLDEN FLAME and restart the world!"

We were all dead silent.

"The fire of the GOLDEN FLAME, has killed the upper world. Your homes, farms, people, animals, life, is gone. Now...if we would've gone deeper into the earth you would've melted by the earths core. It wouldn't matter where you were. I'm sorry to say Earth has been scorched from the outside to the center. There is nothing left. You all since the water has drained have been flying in space. I'm sorry to have kept this from you so long. You are now going to start a new life on the planet, VATEX."

The Tv's flickered off. Dead silence rung. Suddenly a wall removed reveling a glass wall. We looked out as we rocketed away from earth. The Earth looked like a burning flower wilting under a flame. Our hands covered our mouths. It felt like our hearts stopped beating. Tears began to stream. The only home, country, state, house, continent, world, Earth, atmosphere, air, we ever knew along with are family, friends, mom and dad............everything...........was.........
