I woke up early. I never was able to sleep in, school was no problem for me, most would complain waking up early. I enjoyed seeing the sunrise. I didn’t like the dark.

I went downstairs to see Rosemary preparing my mother’s breakfast. I smiled.

“Hello Rosemary”, I said cheerily, a smile on my face. I was happy it was summer.

“Hello my dear Amelia, did you find anyone to help out on the farm? I would pitch in but my back… Dear are you ok? You look a little pale.” She glanced over at me warily.

I had forgotten the new employee was starting today. I had a feeling this was a mistake hiring a complete stranger. Maybe I should say we didn’t need the help. But I didn’t have his contact number. Oh well, Amelia you’re just going to have to face this person.

“Yes, Rosemary someone answered my ad last night, I gave him the job”

“Oh”, she raised her eyebrows, “and who is it?”

“I don’t know”, I said a little ashamed. “I gave him job without asking.”

“Oh Amelia, honey you can’t do that, you need to invite them over and talk about qualifications, and make sure they aren’t into drugs or dreadful things like that” she sounded gentle but she always did worry a bit too much sometimes.

I rolled my eyes at her. But seeing as she had a very good point I didn’t argue. I was stupid; just watch this person be a complete loser who is addicted to cocaine or something!

“Ugh, I’m sorry Rosemary, I just didn’t know”, I sighed heavily and rested my head on the kitchen table. “This is going to be horrible isn’t it?”

“No deary, if you have any problems I’ll take care of him for you” she said this while clenching her hands into fists. I giggled uncontrollably. Just the thought of her punching a fly made me burst out laughing.

“Thanks Rose”, I smiled at her as I left to get dressed, there was a lot of work to get done and I doubted this newbie was going to be much of a help on the first day.

I dressed in my usual green crop cargo pants and plain grey t-shirt. I was working with animals and in the dirt all day; I didn’t need to look good.

I sat out on the porch watching the sun rise over our tall trees. I smiled. This was my favorite time of the day, I felt sunrises brought new beginnings, but sunsets were beautiful too. Sunsets promised another day full of adventure. This is exactly what my dad had told me one day.

I remember we both sat at the edge of the lake, our feet barely touching the cold water. It was late evening and the sun was beginning to set. I had told him sunrises were my favorite but he insisted we stay for the sunset. He said he cherished them, they meant he had lived another full day, and that there was always something to look forward to tomorrow. I will never forget that night. It was the night my father died.

I didn’t want to remember, but I also couldn’t forget.

A voice interrupted my thoughts.

“Um, hello? I’m here for the job on your farm”

I looked up and my heart stopped. His eyes were beautiful, I could see them so clearly, the most stunning dark blue. His face tanned, and his hair just a little long so it fell right above his eyes. He was tall, making me feel almost normal in height. And his voice in those few words was captivating.

“This is the right place… for the job?” he asked unsure.

My face got bright red and I tried turning my head slightly so he wouldn’t be able to see. I had been staring like an idiot. He shocked me is all.
