Out Of This World

It's been 25 years since the expedition started. The only other life force I interact with are the thousands of plants that surround me. I have learned to see in the pitch blackness I'm constantly in.

Our last stop was 13 years ago, and that's when everything went wrong. We landed on a luscious planet without daylight. We wouldn't have seen it had Steevy not just fixed the grid view that morning. He was very smart.

Our instructions were to stop at every planet we came across to meet the lifeforms inhabiting them.

All of the past planets had been pleasant but this one. This one was different. When we stepped off the ship all was silent except for the whispering trees. It took us a full 24 hours to figure out that we were hearing the trees. Jacob figured that one out. He also figured out that they whispered through their leaves. He was very smart.

They never got to find out what they were saying though. I had to figure that one out alone.

We spent 62 hours exploring the planet with our headlamps, and the whispering always seemed to get louder with our approach.

During our last scheduled night time, we decided to camp outside before leaving the next scheduled morning. We set up a fire with the materials we brought with us. That was our first mistake.

The moment the fire was lit, the trees screamed. In less than 20 seconds, the fire was put out by the nearest tree but they didn't stop screaming. We sat shocked for a moment until Drake shouted at us to run back to the ship.

We followed his command. Once we were on board we sealed it all up and decided to leave right away. The only problem was that we left all of our important and non-replaceable gear at the campsite. We drew strings and Jacob along with John were the chosen two. They never came back.

Next was Drake and Frank. They never came back.

Lastly was Steevy, Bradly, and I. I came back. The trees slaughtered them. The trees chose to spare me. They provide food and I provide uninterrupted darkness.

They don't talk to me but I know what they are saying. When we first heard them, they were warning each other about the "carriers of light". Now they talk about the newcomer on the ship. They say it will kill me soon. They have been debating whether or not to save me.

I haven't heard nor seen the newcomer yet. I don't know where it came from. But I know it will kill me. The trees are saying it cares for them and doesn't have fire with it. They say it will protect and provide for them better.

The trees have stopped feeding me. I assume my death is approaching.

I hear the newcomer. It's brushing against the trees, coming towards me. I turn and instantly recognize her. It's me. I'm dead.
