It's a long road and you're on your own

I placed my hair up in a ponytail, ready for war. The family we'd worked so hard to maintain was quickly falling apart. Hannah was depressed, Derek was...a mess and Nathan and I were trying to keep it together. Hardly.
"Where are you going?" Nathan asked with a frown.
"I'm going to check on Derek."
"You're what?" He asked, disapproval clear in his tone.
"I said, I'm going to check on Derek."
He looked down at me, taking hold of my arm. "The hell you are." Oh, those eyes. Menacing. Beautiful. "I told you the state he was in when we found him last night, Evie. I'm not going to let you go and get yourself hurt."
Hurt?
I had to somehow find a way to be there for both Derek and Hannah at the same time. This couldn't be anymore hurtful, it wasn't possible. They were both in pain, and I couldn't possibly choose between them. I loved them both. Hannah was hurt and after her attempt I wasn't going to leave her alone, but Derek was my brother too. I couldn't abandon him.
He was falling down the path of addiction again and I at least had to try to get him out of it.
"Evie-"
"I can't sit around doing nothing, knowing he's going to ruin his life," I stated, picking up my purse.
"You also can't help someone who doesn't want help, Evie."
His words were true. Hurtful...but true. There was nothing I could do if Derek didn't want my help. But I at least had to try.
"I just need to do this," I said, avoiding Nathan's intimidating gaze. "I know it may not help, I know that it may be pointless but I need to try. Just this once, okay?"
"Let me change and I'll go with you," Nathan sighed.
I shook my head. "We can't leave Hannah alone. Stay here, please? I promise I'll be okay. I'll call you as soon as I'm there and once I'm out too. Please."
He smiled, his hand cupping my cheek tenderly while the other went down to my belly. With his forehead pressed against mine, he told me how much he loved me, his gray eyes showing the concern he felt. "You're so fucking stubborn," he murmured. "You drive me insane."
"Sorry," I said, kissing his lips. "But I love you."
"I love you too, baby. Be careful, okay? I promise if I don't hear from you in the next hour or so I'll go hunt you down."
I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck. This was good. Being with him was always good. He would give me peace even if the world around us was falling apart.
