Lily was awoken by her alarm at 4 o’clock in the morning, which was soon silenced as she reached over and stabbed her phone with her finger several times before she was able to dismiss the continuous buzzing.
As silence fell in the dark room, Lily wrapped herself in her duvet with the reassurance that she wouldn’t have to be up for at least another four hours.
Just as she was about to drift off, she heard her door slowly creak open – it was probably her mum wondering why her phone had gone off so early, “I’m sorry, I must have forgotten to change my alarm from AM to PM.” She mumbled from under the covers, sighing loudly.
Her mother climbed in next to her ignoring her comment, “Mummmm its four in the mornnnnniiinnnngggggg, and your feet are coldddd.” But Lily happily cuddled into her mother's open arms.
“Come on sweetie…time to get up…” There was sadness and excitement in her voice all at once.
“Noooooo it’s too early.” Lily released herself from her mother’s embrace and crawled under the duvet to escape the early morning. Her mother didn’t move or tell her off for not getting up and Lily knew her mother’s silence was worse than be told off.
She took a deep breath, the sheets smelt of lavender and vanilla, just like her nanny. Her nanny? Why would her sheets smell like her nanny? She was now fully awake under the covers and started to remember what was going on – why her alarm went off; why the sheets smelt like her nanny and why her mother was lying beside her stroking her hair.
She quickly untangled herself from the covers so that she could see the outline of her mother’s face. A smile spread across her face as she knew her daughter had remembered what was happening.
“Good morning princess, sleep well?” she said leaning over to kiss her forehead.
“Yes! I didn’t want to leave this bed but I’m too excited now!!” Lily exclaimed quickly, “I’m s t a r v i n g.” Just on queue her stomach rumbled loudly.
“Excellent, your father and I have made pancakes and bacon for you – but get dressed before you eat.”
Her mother gave her another kiss on her forehead before climbing out of the bed and out the door, closing it softly behind her.
As her mother's footsteps grew quieter Lily jumped out of bed straight to her ipod which was charging beside the window. She scrolled through her musical options and remembered all the memories that each song contained - her mind wandered to her best friends and how they would do without her now that she was actually leaving.
Having decided on "Its Time" by Imagine Dragons, her attention turned to her suitcase and the clothes that she was going to travel in. It would be a long flight from Northern Ireland to Austalia so it would have to be something comfortable.
Putting on leggings, a Pokémon top, ankle socks, vans and a hoodie that she ‘borrowed’ from her brother before he left for Australia four days ago, Lily gathered her hair into an extremly messy bun as her hair was far too long not to look like a muffin on her head but it was early and only a temporary way of keeping her hair out of her face.
She then climbed back onto the bed and picked up her phone from the beside table and went into her messages. Clicking onto her best friends name Lily began typing away, 'Okay it's 4.15 in the morning i have to leave at 6 and ill then be enroute to the airport! :( :) Charles you have no idea how glad i am that i dont have a boyfriend because leaving you behind is hard enough. I’ll see you when i see you! :c'
Charles had been Lily's best friend for lord knows how long, they were more than best friends, more than sisters…actually they were a couple in they're own way which was kinda weird but heya that’s friendship. Charles real name was Charlie and was in fact a girl much to everyone’s confusion and Lily’s posh nickname didn’t help with it either. But it somehow suited the sarcastic weirdo and it stuck.
Thankfully whenever everything was settled at the new house Charlie would be on the first flight over in two weeks and Lily couldn’t wait.
After Lily sent a group message to her other friends, but it wasn’t as emotional to send. Lily knew that a day would come whether it was for university or whatever it would turn out to be for (which turned out to be an amazing job offer for her mum and brother in Australia) that she would have to leave her friends behind and move on with her life.
As she was about to get off the bed her phone buzzed, it was Charlie;
"Im gonna miss ya too you weirdo but I’ll be over soon enough to annoy you! ;)"
"Charles what are you doing up at 4:20 in the morning???"
"ehhhhhhhhh....."
"Are you on tumblr?!"
"ehhhh maybe.....possibly.........yes"
"Of course you are! Right i need food so ill message you when i can! And try to get some sleep!!"
Turning her iPod off and grabbing her phone Lily opened her door and skipped down the hallway into the kitchen, "MMMMMOOOOOOORRRRRRRNNNNNNNIIIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGG."
*******************************************
The trip to the airport was long and boring but with 5sos playing in Lily’s ear it was far more exciting. As she watched the green trees and fields fly by she wondered if she would finally be able to hear her favourite band play live. Just as the airport was coming into view ‘Long Way Home’ began to play, and for the first time since she was told she was leaving a couple of tears began to fall down her face. however when the taxi pulled up to the front entrance of the airport ‘English Love Affair’ was now loudly playing and Lily felt like she could accomplish anything.
After passports, bags and hand luggage was all checked Lily made a beeline straight to McDonalds, “Lil really? Its half 7 in the morning and we already had bacon buddies this morning are you really hungry?” Her dad looked at her with an amused look on his face because he knew that his daughter was hungry again and would start getting grumpy if she didn’t get anything soon. Lily flashed her father a large grin as she stared walking backwards, “Ill come find you!”
Minutes later Lily was settled down opposite her mother and father, who were now seated beside each other on worn maroon leather sofas.
"Well, are you ready for the final flight back to Aussie?" Her mother asked, raising her eyebrow while blowing into her cup of hot coffee.
"Of course im ready!" Lily mumbled with her mouth full of chicken nuggets, "I might actually be able to see 5sos in concert now!!...eh not like thats the main reason that I agreed to come along..." Lily bent her head down towards her food, feeling her mother’s stare drill into her head. Her father however was silently giggling into his cup.
BING BONG
"FLIGHT NUMBER 58HSOE HEADING FOR MELBORN AUSTRALIA PLEASE MAKE YOUR WAY TO GATE 8C."
Before Jan could put her cup down to tell her family it was time to go, Lily had already shoved the remaining nuggets back into their box and into her bag and was heading towards the signs labelled 'Gates 6 - 8'.
