My ears started ringing as the plane took off and ascended into the clouds of the far horizon.
I don't know if I could count myself lucky to have gotten on the plane. It was the last trip before the Japanese government issues a strict travel ban. Actually , the ban was already implemented. However, since I work for the United Nations Security Council , the flight was overlooked.
These past few weeks , a pandemic was rapidly spreading across the globe. I was deployed to Japan to secure Dr. Mishiba, a famous virologist. He is one of the key figures needed in order to solve and figure out this horrible mess caused by this viral threat.
Dr. Mishiba was now buckled safely in the seat beside me, snoring.
The plane jerked for a while , caused by a light turbulence. The flight from Japan to New Zealand will probably take 10 hours and a half, if no mishaps midway happens. The research will be held on a UN Research Station situated at Antarctica.
I idly watched the newscast on the screen attached to the seat in front of me.
A male Caucasian reporter was talking non-stop.
Riots were happening all over the world. Chaos fell on major cities , with most of countries declaring martial law. It seemed like most of US cities were already military quarantined. Although I was relaxed , I never let my defenses down and was constantly observing the surrounding, always wary and alert for any unexpected mishaps that might occur.
Suddenly , out of the corner of my eye, I saw a suspicious looking man . He was drenched in sweat and acts agitated. He then locks himself on the bathroom, slamming the door in the process. A female flight attendant knocks on the door, asking whether the man was feeling sick or what. My instincts are telling me something is definitely off.
Something bad is about to happen.
Then from the back , a commotion was happening. I quickly woke up Dr. Mishiba and gave him the handgun tucked at the vest underneath my jacket.
" If worse comes to worst. Don't hesitate to use this." I commanded.
Dr. Mishiba nodded. I then stood up and told the other passengers to calm down. I then walked carefully towards the back to check what's happening there. Then I heard wet, coughing sounds.
When the coughing stopped, a woman screamed and utter chaos broke out. People jumped out their seats to try to help, but it only seemed to cause the situation to get worse.
There was screaming, yelling for help, and the distant sound of chewing sounds. I tried to run back towards Dr. Mishiba when I stumbled and fell towards one of the empty seats. The plane tilted downwards, this is bad. For a moment there , my thoughts were scattered alongside the feeling called fear of death. An awful cacophony of metal and earth twisting around each other filled my ears. I then looked at Dr. Mishiba's panicked look.
And then there was only darkness and fire.
