"So, Christopher, how do you like living with Olivia and Elliot?" Vicky, Chris' caseworker questioned as she conducted one of her monthly visits.
"I love living here with them! They are the best!" He exclaimed as he sat by the coffee table and drew a picture. Vicky smiled softly.
"Good. Do you like your babysitter?" She asked, and Chris nodded.
"Yeah, but I only get to see her a few times a week. Livvie and Elliot don't cook as well as she does too." He spoke, as he wrinkled his nose. I sighed, as I ran my hand over my face. Vicky laughed at that, while Chris got up and giggled in front of me.
"I love you, Livvie." He smiled, and I sighed as I grabbed him by his waist and pulled him close. I covered his face in kisses while he continued to giggle. That adorable little laugh got me every time.
"Well, it looks like you three are doing great together. Christopher, may I talk to your foster mom for a few minutes?" She asked, and Chris nodded. He kissed my cheek, before running towards his room.
"So, is everything okay?" I asked.
"We found some family members." She frowned. Vicky knew how much Elliot and I already loved Chris, and for them to find family members that have interested in him was heartbreaking.
"They want him," I whispered.
"They do. His maternal grandmother and her daughter live together and want to raise Christopher together."
"How old are they? Because clearly Elliot and I are still young and have enough energy to run after him!" I exclaimed.
"Christopher's mother was the youngest, and the sister is the oldest..." She was tiptoeing around this all. It was pissing me off but I had to keep my cool.
"Way older than we are, huh?"
"The mother is 70, and the oldest daughter is 50. I'm sorry, but we have to look into placing Christopher with them because they are his last remaining family members that have shown any interest in him."
"So the trust my husband and I have built with Chris doesn't matter?"
"Oh Olivia, it matters so much. What you have been able to do for that little boy is amazing. He watched his mother get... you know... but he has learned to trust and love again. And if his grandmother and aunt show me that they can't keep up with an energetic little boy, then he will be brought right back here to you two, where we can start up the paperwork for adoption." She breathed, and I nodded slowly. I stood up and ran my hands through my hair.
"When does this all start?"
"Next Monday I need you to join us on a trip to New Jersey." She spoke, and I nodded.
"Okay." I breathed, before walking her to the door. She put her jacket on and frowned.
"I'm so sorry. This placement has been the most flawless one I've ever seen. And I hate to break it up, but we like to keep kids with family."
"Even if their family is going to be 85 and 65 when he graduates from high school."

Monday morning Elliot and I woke up early. We both showered and then sat together and drank coffee. I could hear Chris snoring softly from his room, that's how quiet our apartment was.
"So we will go and meet these women. But I'm sure Vicky will pick us."
"El, there will be a hearing regarding who will get him or not. God, I hope we do." I whispered. I finished my coffee, before standing and leaving the kitchen.
I leaned against Chris' doorframe, and I watched as the small boy continued to sleep as if nothing was happening today. I felt Elliot's arms wrap around my waist, as the first few tears ran down my cheeks.
"I want him to be our son so badly. I'm tired of not knowing if I'll get to see him grow up or not." I whispered as I wiped a tear from my cheek.
"I want him to be our son too, and eventually we will know if he will or not. We just need to think about what the best is for him."
"Being with us is the best for him," I spoke, before walking into the bedroom. Only light from the hallway and Chris' dinosaur nightlight took the darkness away. I sank down on the edge of his bed and caressed his soft red curls for a few moments before he woke up. He smiled at me.
"Hey, Livvie." He smiled, and I smiled back.
"Hey, Chrissy. Wanna get up and we can go out for breakfast?" I asked because I wanted to make sure that all the days that we had with him were amazing because I wanted him to really remember us if he was taken away. And just like my husband, this boy loved eating.
"Yeah!" He exclaimed. I leaned down and kissed his forehead gently before drawing him onto my lap. I held him close for several long moments.
"I love you so much, Christopher. Always remember that, okay?"
"Okay, Mommy." He yawned.
I looked at Elliot as my eyes went wide. That was the first time, and hopefully not the last time, that he'll call me Mommy.

"I'm Cristine, and this is my daughter Candice." Christopher's grandmother spoke, as we met outside of their New Jersey home.
"Hello, I'm Elliot and this is my wife, Olivia." My husband spoke, as I stood next to him. Christopher was shy, because he never even met these two women, and he had buried his face into my hair and his legs were wrapped tightly around my waist.
"It's nice to meet you both. And I assume that is my grandson?" Cristine asked, and I nodded slowly.
"Yeah, this is Christopher. He's a little shy around new people, but I swear he's the sweetest kid there is." I breathed, as I rested my cheek against his red curls.
"He's got my Chloe's hair." She breathed. I knew that. I saw what his mother looked like before they took her away.
"Christopher, I need you to meet your grandmother and aunt," Vicky spoke, but Christopher refused to let go of me as she tried to pull him off of me. I looked at Vicky as tears welled in my eyes.
"Let me talk to him real quick? Okay?" I breathed, and she nodded.
"Take your time."
