In a pit there lived a squat, splendid troll named Dan Thunder. Not an industrial peculiar, ample pit, filled with bananas and a freezing smell, nor yet a scheming, dirty, old-fashioned pit with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a troll-pit, and that means happiness.
One day, after a troubling visit from the gremlin Harold Thornton, Dan leaves his pit and sets out in search of three magical sausages. A quest undertaken in the company of ghosts, trolls and quiet people.

During his travels, Dan rescues a teapot, an heirloom belonging to Harold. But when Harold refuses to try loving, their friendship is over.
However, Harold is wounded at the Battle of Britain and the two reconcile just before Dan engages in some serious loving.
Dan accepts one of the three magical sausages and returns home to his pit a very wealthy troll
