Dawn visualised a set of six arms springing out the sides of her body as she faced her Aunt in the kitchen. Her father sat quietly at the table drinking his coffee and watching her. She could not tell if he was angry or indifferent to what was taking place in his home that morning.

“Explain yourself young lady,” her Aunt said glaring at her, “Your behaviour last night is all over Facebook this morning.”

“Really?” Dawn asked feeling like someone had dug a hole in the back of her head. She really was not in any decent mood to deal with her Aunt this morning.

“Hey Dawn have you seen, you’re famous.” Andy said as he bounced into the kitchen.

James followed carrying his phone to show Dawn and came to an abrupt halt when he saw the face-off between the famous Aunt Eve and the hung over Dawn.

The twins stood either side of Dawn and she now felt as though she really had six arms, four of which belonged to her twin best friends. Pulling her shoulders back and holding her head high she squared up to her Aunt and looked her straight in the eye.

“I don’t have to explain myself to you. I am not a child anymore. At twenty-two I am an adult now and getting married in two days’ time and I will be out of your hair forever. It was my bridal shower and my last fling as a single woman and I intended to have the party of my life before I have to start acting responsibly as a wife and possibly a mother in the future. A mother, who will have a very different perspective on how she brings up her child.” Dawn looked across at her father who still sat quietly, smiling at her.

Andy coughed and Dawn looked at him and noticed him wink at her. His eyes looked from her to the kitchen door and back to her. Dawn caught the hint. It was time to make her exit before her Aunt had time to take in all she’d just said and think of a reply.

“And I’m not fussed if you don’t think I deserve my presents and you’re welcome to return them if you so wish. I had a blast, a party I’ll never forget and now if you’ll excuse me I promised the twins we’d go riding this morning.” Dawn said grabbing the twins hands and just before walking out the door she turned back and said to her father, “Dad, James and Andy are staying till after the wedding to help out with any last minute details seeing as Annie had to return home till the wedding.” That said she turned and walked hand in hand with the twins out the kitchen door leaving her Aunt glaring after her with her mouth slightly open.

“Close your mouth Eve, you didn’t really expect her to take all your arrangements lying down without refusing to do something.” Steven said, inwardly laughing thinking how much like her mother his daughter was.

“She takes after your wife.” Eve said turning on him.

“My wife, and your sister too.” Steven remarked.

“Well you only have yourself to blame if she doesn’t turn up for the wedding. You should’ve supported me.” Eve criticized her brother.

“Of course she’ll be at her wedding. I can’t see any reason she wouldn’t be.”

“Steven, how blind are you. Have you not noticed the tension between Dawn and Luke lately?” Eve asked her brother.

“No, as a matter of fact I thought how very connected they were when I saw them together coming out of the barn the other morning. Their arms were wrapped around each other and they kept stopping to kiss each other.” Steven replied.

Eve looked at him and frowned.

Andy and James laughed at Dawn.

“What are you two laughing at?” Dawn asked them.

“You’re quite a little spitfire when you’re cross.” Andy replied.
