[Chapter Sixty-One]

I smoothed Christopher's curls, as I tried to keep them slicked back enough for court today.

"Mommy?" Christopher asked, and I bit my lip as I looked into his beautiful green eyes. He had started calling me Mommy, and Elliot Daddy, shortly after our meeting with his grandmother and aunt.

"Yes, my love?" I asked. He sighed as he pulled on his collar and shifted awkwardly in his spot.

"Why do I have to wear this stupid thing? And these shoes? I wanna wear my light up ones." He frowned. I chuckled as I pulled him close and kissed his temple gently.

"Because you need to look like a little gentleman, like your Daddy." I grinned. He sighed as he looked up at me.

"I love you, Mommy, but please don't make me wear this." He begged. I laughed as he gave me a small smile, but he had to wear it. If I had to wear a dress, he had to wear his little suit.

"Woah, you two look amazing," Elliot spoke, as I stood and smoothed my skirt.

"Daddy, make her-"

"Oh, young one, you have a few things to learn about your Mommy. She hates to be told what to do. She's the boss." Elliot grinned. He walked to Christopher and swung him into his arms, before taking a step towards me. He kissed me softly, before sighing.

"Are you both ready?"

"Not for court and what may happen, but we are both dressed and fed so I guess."

I sat with Christopher on my lap as we waited for court to start. One of Elliot's friends from school was going to represent us, as long as I promised to babysit his kid once a month so his and his wife could have a date night.

"Mommy, when is this gonna start?" Christopher whined, which is something he has started to do a lot of recently.

"In a few minutes, love. Tell me what I told you to remember, no matter what happens." I spoke, as Elliot continued to pace the length of the hallway.

"That you and Daddy will always love me no matter what. That when I get older, if I get taken from you, that I will always have a home with you and Daddy. That I can never be replaced even if you have babies. That I'll always be your son." Christopher spoke, and I smiled and nodded.

"Right again," I spoke. We had been practicing that for a week because we needed him to remember that all, whether or not he ended up with us.

The door to the courtroom opened, and our lawyer walked out.

"We are ready for you."

"Christopher is a small boy who just needs someone to be his family. He can't be with the Stablers, because they are not his blood relatives. We are. We are the only family he has left, and he needs to be with us. He needs to learn about his mother and how amazing she was. He doesn't need to forget about her, and learn to love people who aren't even his real family." Cristine spoke, as she stood and spoke her case. It was strong because the family court prefers to keep children with their families. But, depending on what Vicky decides, we may have more than just our statement on our side.

"It's your turn." The judge spoke, as she looked at us. Elliot stood up and placed his hand to my shoulder as I looked over my shoulder and saw Christopher sitting with Vicky. She was trying to keep him occupied, but he was actually sitting still and listening.

"Your honor, I'm Elliot Stabler. My wife would've spoken, but thinking about losing Christopher is too much for her. Olivia found Christopher the day he became an orphan. She was the only one who was able to talk him out from under the bed, and the first person he trusted. She brought him home, and I fell in love with this boy, just like she did. Yes, they are his family. They share blood. But blood doesn't make a family. My wife was adopted, and she grew up with two loving parents and didn't regret not staying with her mother. Christopher needs a mother and a father. We can be that for him. We do not want to forget about his grandmother and aunt, we want them to still be a part of his life. But he's a boy, one that loves to wrestle and run around screaming as one of us chases him around before bathtime. He's happy with us, and he loves us. We are happy with him, and we love him too."

The judge nodded as Elliot finished his statement. My husband sat down, and then the judge looked towards Vicky.

"Miss, what have you decided to be the best situation for Christopher to live in?"

"Your honor, I believe that Mr. and Mrs. Stabler would be the best option for Christopher. I do not doubt the love that Cristine and Candice could give him, but in reality, Christopher needs two parents. He needs a father to teach him how to become a man that he can be proud of. He needs a mother to teach him to care. He needs the chance to have a normal life, and he can only get that with the Stablers." Vicky spoke. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I looked at Elliot.

"Well, then I will accept your response. Mr. and Mrs. Stabler, you may now start the process of adopting Christopher."

[*]

Elliot and I held Christopher's hands as we walked down by the river. Christopher couldn't stop talking about how he was going to be a Stabler. He talked about how he was going to be the best little boy ever so we don't change our minds.

"Buddy, nothing can change our minds! We love you too much, and want to be your parents too much for that to ever cross our minds!" Elliot exclaimed as we helped our soon to son over a puddle.

"I can't wait!" He squealed, as he dropped our hands and started to jump around in front of us. I laughed as I ran to him and picked him up. I held him close and placed soft kisses to his cheeks.

"We can't wait either."
