Lifty felt the vibration of his phone go off. He slowly rised his head up from his pillow and rubbed his eye. He must've forgotten to turn off his notifications for the night. What time is it? Lifty thought, grudgingly picking up his phone. The light from it blinded him, and he instantly turned his head away. Keeping only one eye open, he turned the brightness down, and saw that it was 3 AM. Who could be texting me at this time? Lifty thought for a moment. Oh right...Shifty. Lifty tapped on the notification and input his password. His phone loaded up the Message app and he read the text message Shifty sent."Hey hey hey cmere" The text read. Lifty paused for a moment. "no," Lifty wrote. "it's 3 am, what could you possibly want at this time of night?" He pressed sent. Shifty responded seconds after.
"im at mcdonalds, bitch"
"what the hell are you doing there? you aren't harassing anyone, are you?"
Shifty ignored his question. "i have like...12 burgwrs"
"i doubt you'll eat them all, nor do you have the money to pay for them"
"bitch, ypu thijnk i payed for this shit?"
"you're gonna get arrested, get your ass home now"
"i just dressed as an employee, and just kinda wqlked out with em"
Lifty mentally facepalmed. This idiot...he seriously needs to stop drinking. I know he likes it and all...but it's going to get him in serious trouble. He thought.
"i dont wanna come hom\c"
"why not? it's not good to be out this late, you know!"
Shifty ignored him again. "iX'm gonna eat all the burgers"
"don't eat them all at once!"
"i'm eating them"
"slow down, you're gonna vomit if you eat too quickly, at this point, you're probably as high as a kite"
"ugh what are you my wife?"
"i'm only tryna look out for you, dummy"
"Ok ok im heading home"
Relief washed over Lifty like a wave. Shifty can be so stubborn when he's intoxicated. It's really annoying to try and convince him to stay out trouble, especially when you aren't physically there.
"finally, you're so stubborn sometimes"
Shifty didn't respond after that. Lifty felt a little nervous again.
Thirty minutes passed, and the entire time, Lifty was pacing back and forth in his bedroom, wondering when Shifty would get home. Please hurry up... Lifty thought. The doorbell rang, and a voice said, "Ay, lemme in!" Lifty's ears perked up, and he swiftly left his bedroom and raced down the stairs to see his brother. He ran to the door and smiled, as he saw Shifty standing there. He was carrying a bag, and it smelled like burgers. "Hey, idiot." Shifty said, causally eating his 7th burger. Lifty could smell the alcohol from Shifty's breath, and he wasn't even standing up straight. What a mess he is.. Lifty thought. "How rude, and don't you think you've eaten enough for one night?" Lifty asked. Shifty took a second bite out of the burger. "No, fuck ya, I do what I want." Lifty rolled his eyes. "Alright, have fun, I'm goin' to my room." Lifty started his way back up the stairs. He wished Shifty was as happy to see him as Lifty was as happy to see Shifty. "Night, asshat." Shifty called. "You're the one with the stupid fedora on!" Lifty said, before slamming his door shut. Shifty felt the ground rattle. Did...did I make him mad? He thought.
Lifty could hear the peaceful melodies of the birds singing their daily songs. The sun was shining bright today, and it was so warm under the covers, it made Lifty want to stay in bed a little longer. But he got up anyway, because he was hungry. He sat up straight, and stratched while yawning. He left his bedroom and went downstairs, to see boxes, and a piece of paper, all over the floor near Shifty. Lifty could feel his blood start to boil. Doesn't he know what a damn trash can is?! Lifty thought. He picked up the boxes all at once, and shoved them in the trash can. He slammed the lid shut. He then remembered the stupid piece of paper. Approaching it, Lifty saw there was Shifty's terrible handwriting on it. The letter read:
Hello, Lifty. You're angry at the fact that I didn't clean up after myself, I know, but, I left something in the microwave for you. I hope you enjoy it.
-Shifty
P.S., I tried my best to write this down for you.Lifty didn't trust this for a second. I bet this is just a prank. Lifty reluctantly made his way to the kitchen microwave. He opened it, and saw three boxes with Lifty's name on it. He opened all of them, and inside were...burgers!! There was another note on the third box, he unfolded it, and read it.
Thanks for cleaning up my mess, you neat freak, and enjoy your food.
Lifty had a big smile on his face. He looked at Shifty, peacefully sleeping on the couch with his fedora covering his face. Lifty came out the living room with his food and a slip of paper in his hand. He taped the paper to Shifty's hat.
Thanks, Shift. This means a lot. Sweet dreams.
Sincerely,
Lifty.
