The words echoed in Clare Edward’s ears. There was a moment of silence before the voice on the other line spoke again, “Hello? Are you sti—“
“B-baby?!” Clare stuttered. She felt nauseated and could hear her heart beat rapidly in her ears. “Yes. Did you not know that you were pregnant?” Clare swallowed the lump in her throat, “No…no I didn’t know.” And that was the complete truth, how didn’t I know that there was a living organism inside me? Clare thought while her mind raced. It’s Drew’s. She felt a pang in her stomach when she thought about the storage room and how she had had unprotected sex with Drew Torres of all people. Clare looked over to find Drew and Becky Baker all over each other, her hands griping his shoulder and his hands gripping her teeny-tiny waist. Something that she would never have again for a long time thanks to this baby.
“Well Ms. Edwards I advise you to visit your local clinic as soon as possible and get things cleared up. And more importantly, to find out whom the father is. That is unless, you know who it is.”
“I have a feeling that I know.” Clare couldn’t take her eyes off Becky and Drew and they couldn’t take their eyes off each other. “Thanks anyways. Uhm, I’ll do that.”
“Great. Well I can only wish you luck. Have a good day.” The earnest voice of the woman on the line was replaced with a dull timbre that seemed to never end. Clare pulled the phone away from her ear and stared at the phone screen to find herself looking back. Her reflection looked miserable. Almost as miserable as she felt. And to think that just a few minutes ago, everything was looking up for her. And as a best friend, Alli seemed to sense that something was wrong. “'Something up?” Alli asked Clare resting her hands on Clare’s shoulder. I should probably tell Alli. Clare thought. But I don’t even know if I’m pregnant for sure. Clare tried to reassure herself that it might’ve been a mistake. There must be another eighteen year old young woman named Clare Edwards and has the same number as me… But it wasn’t working. Clare knew that she was pregnant, even if she didn’t feel pregnant. “Nothing!” She lied, turning around to face Alli. “Everything is absolutely great!” Clare faked a smile. But Alli was clearly not brainless, she knew that something was up. “What was that call about?”
“The call…?” Clare swallowed yet another lump in her throat. “The call was from my mom. Guess it's not a New York number after all. She needs me back home like now. So I should probably go now.”
“Did she say why?”
“No. I guess I’ll have to find out. Bye!” Clare then jogged to her car, refusing to look back. She’ll just have to find out later. And so will I.
