Kyle
After Ashlyn was gone, I slipped back inside dejected and fell back over the armrest of the couch. I studied the ceiling in boredom, having no interest in what was happening around me. So little interest, I startled as Kaltain leaned over the back of the couch to peer down at me with a raised eyebrow.
"You okay there kiddo?" She asked, always the most perceptive of people. Sometimes it felt like she had taken up the empty maternal place in my life after the car wreck that had taken my mother.
"Yeah... I'm okay, just miss Ashlyn, as stupid as it sounds," I smiled ruefully, sitting up as Kaltain walked around the couch to sit beside me.
"It's far from stupid," she snorted and ruffled my hair, ironic considering how much time she spent badgering Jet to fix his. "You'll always miss one another, you're like a pair of frickin magnets! I miss Blake even when he's just at the grocery store," she laughed and a smiled tugged at the corner of my mouth.
"Guess that's true..." I sighed and dropped my head back. Kaltain tilted her head and patted my knee.
"I know what you need! A little outing with your cousins. Jeffery and Cadenza won't be here till tomorrow or the next day but you could go out with Jet and Anna, maybe even Henry," Kaltain smiled and stood up, walking over to the foot of the stairs.
"Where?" I laughed and stood up, trailing after her.
"Go out hiking in the woods or something. Exploration!" Kaltain beamed. "Jet! Anna!" She called and they came pounding down the stairs. That didn't sound too terrible, it would be nice to spend time with them.
"Yeah Mom?" Jet asked slinging his arm around Anna's shoulders and she elbowed him in the ribs playfully.
"You three should out for a while!" She suggested in a way that was more telling than suggesting.
"Oooo, can we?" Anna grinned at Jet and I, already backing away to retrieve her sneakers. I rolled my eyes and sighed dramatically.
"I guess we could go outside, explore the woods, all that," I agreed and grabbed my shoes. Jet grinned wickedly and sat to pull his shoes on, a mischievous glint in his dark eyes.
"Great! You kids could use some vitamin D!" Kaltain exclaimed, winking at me encouragingly. I smiled back, knowing she was trying to get my spirits up and give me a good distraction.
"Trust me, I know-" Jet started to mutter and I kicked his foot, not thinking his mother should bare witness to his inappropriate humor. Anna was already out the back door, foot tapping impatiently as Jet and I made our way out behind her.
"Let's go you slow pokes!" She groaned, dragging us across the backyard and past the tree line. I smiled as I glanced around, taking a deep breath of the fresh piney smell, all kinds of other smells seeping into my senses.
"Hey Ann, race ya!" Jet smirked as he pulled his top off, dropping it in the dirt.
"No shifting!" I called immediately, not trusting them to keep themselves out of trouble.
"Oh come on, please Kyle! Dad never lets me, and I'm finally able to! I'll be safe and stay with you guys, pleaseeee!" Anna begged. I frowned slightly, knowing it was always a big deal when you got your first shift and were able to finally take on your second form. But she was still young and it was only the three of us...
"Fine, but you have to stay close and do as I say, alright?" I asked sternly, kicking my shoes off and pulling my shirt off. My cousin squealed and darted behind a tree to strip as Jet and I undressed and folded our clothes in a pile with our shoes. Jet grinned and stretched his arms, pulling his shoulders back then pushing them forward as he huffed.
