Chapter One

I glared at the ceiling as Elena smiled down at me from across the room. It looked more like a smirk to me than an actual smile and to be honest, I was kind of sick of it. She knew how I felt about smirks.

“Okay baby Damon, what do you have up your sleeve?” I asked as I lay on my stomach. I was kind of glad when I see her smile until I realized that it’s identical to the smirk that Damon has.

“First off, don’t call me baby Damon, and secondly, I kind of like smirking,” she taunted until she broke off in laughter and stood up to claim the shower. I sighed and felt my phone vibrating on the side next to me. I slide the phone under my thigh as Elena popped her head in.

“Is that my phone?” she asked as she came pouncing towards me. I held up a hand and smiled at her, glad I wasn’t touching her.

“Mine! Remember, you have a Galaxy compared to my crappy phone, which is a blackberry. So, if you wanna do me the honors of giving me your phone, I’d gladly take it,” I chirped as I quickly stood up and bounced down the stairs to a grumpy Alaric.

“How can you be so cheery this early in the morning?” he asked as he sat up slowly. I quickly pulled my phone out from the waistband of my yoga shorts and clicked on the message from my black berry; it was from Damon:

Damon: Where the hell are you? And we have another lead: Tennessee. I sighed and quickly erased the message.

“Another lead?” Alaric asked as I deleted the message.

“Don’t tell Elena,” I replied as I clicked the button for the coffee to start.

“Doesn’t it kind of kill you that it’s your birthday and you have to deal with the aftermath of Stefan being gone?” Alaric asked me. I shook my head.

“Not really.”

“Holly-“

“What about Stefan?” Elena asked as I poured myself a cup of water. She had her hair up in a wet bun and looked determined for action.

“Just wondering if you had any leads,” I said as I sipped my water.

“Yes, in Memphis Tennessee. Caroline called and said her mother had another lead.” Elena smiled as Alaric stared between the two of us.

“Well I guess that means another dead end.” I sighed as I glared at Alaric.

“Have you told Damon?” I said as I put down the glass of water on the island and glanced around.

“Where’s Jeremy?” I asked suddenly. My heart sped up a bit as I looked at Elena. She sighed and  pointed to upstairs.

“He’s still asleep even after I tried to wake him up,” she complained as I sighed and trudged upstairs to find an exhausted Jeremy in the bathroom.

“Nice look,” he sighed out. I knew he was referring to my yoga shorts and my neon blue tanktop.

“Hey, I am way more ready than you are,” I laughed out as he groaned.

“Hey Holly?” I turned around.

“Happy birthday,” he said. I smiled and messed up his hair. As I turned to walk out, I heard him call me out again.

“By the way, you look like shit. I think even a little worse than me,” he said. I punched him and stormed out as he laughed out behind me. When I walked into Elena’s and I’s room, I couldn’t help but look at my reflection and admit to myself that Jeremy was right. I had let the stress of Klaus and Stefan leaving get to me. I could see the black circles under my eyes framing my green eyes along with my black hair disheveled showing how exhausted I was. I glanced at the mirror to the person behind me.
