Chapter 1

Mary softly closed the door behind her, sliding the key into the lock. Abby, who was supposed to lock up, had left early with her new boyfriend, Brad. Mary sighed and began her trek home, putting earbuds in and stuffing her phone and keys in her bag.

Snap.

Mary's head whipped around. No one. Just the creepy construction site she always hurried past. Dark shadows of the equipment dance over the sidewalk lit only by streetlights. It was so easy for her to imagine someone creeping around in the dark. She shook off the cold feeling that had suddenly washed over her and kept walking.

Mary. Marrrrryyyyy.

The girl turned around again. The wind whipping through the trees sounded like her name. Being repeated over and over again.

"Hello? Is someone there? Is someone in the construction site?" She called out, her voice getting higher and more panicked with each passing second.

Mary. Come here.

Mary's feet started moving without her consent. Bringing her closer to the place she feared so much. It was like a force was drawing her forward.

Just as her feet hit the soft soil, a terrible wail came from within.

LEAVE!

Mary stumbled back, tripping and hearing something crunch in her bag.

It's ok Mary. Come here. Just for a minute.

As Mary stood up, her bag slipped off her shoulders and fell to the ground. She walked in a dazed trance towards the voice welcoming her in.

Ava pulls her long, brown hair out of its braid, letting the wind from the car windows whip it around her head.

"You should really cut it. I can't even see your face with all that hair." David yells over the wind and the too loud radio.

"That's what you tell Sam, and his is short." She replies, attempting to finger-brush her hair. In the mirror, she sees their brother Sam scowl and rolls his eyes, tucking his shoulder-length brown hair behind his ear.

"Anyways, I think I found a case." Sam quickly veers the conversation away from hair lengths. "Mary Joyner from Portland, Maine was found dead outside a construction site. The flesh had been burned off her body. The police are saying she was alone and that it was an accident, but they don't know what we do."

David shrugs. "Sounds promising. Ava?"

"I have a better idea, how about we relax and take a little vacation?" Ava shoots her big brother (six years her senior) a sly smile.

The oldest Rossler glares at his sister. "Last vacation we took ended in us hunting vampires."

"It's two against one, Ave." Sam points out, choosing his brothers' side as always.

"Fine. You're doing all the work." She huffed, flopping into the leather seat of David's car. "But I wanna kill it."

David winced. "Just don't hurt my car, ok?" David loved his car more than anything in the world. It was given to him by their father, as a sign of trust. Their father, John, had always been hard on David and that had made him closed off to all emotion, as well as cold and sarcastic. Sam was almost the exact opposite, he was open and loving, a protective person who reminded everyone of a puppy dog. Ava, on the other hand, was a mixture of both. She always had a snarky comment at the ready but was fiercely protective as well.
