Michael's family had been there for centuries. Paintings upon paintings of kings and queens hung in the castle's corridors; there was even a whole room dedicated to all the jewels that had ever been passed down to young princesses. Michael went in there once to count all of them; there were roughly about 1,466 necklaces. His family was thought of in the highest ways possible among the kingdom's peasants. Michael's mother made sure to go into the village square every second Thursday of the month to help the single mothers of the kingdom, his father made an attempt to be at military training as much as he could. And the only child of the royal family, the beloved Prince Michael, would entertain the ill kids at the hospital.
If there was one thing about the prince that made everybody absolutely melt, it was his adoration for kids. Michael would make sure to visit the hospital once a month, and when he wasn't there, he was playing with kids in the village. They adored him just as much as he adored them.
The game the kids loved most was when Michael let them climb on him. He would pretend to be a dragon (pretend, because those don't actually exist) and the little boys and girls would be knights trying to slay the dragon. Michael would run around the forest, the young ones following close pursuit, eventually finding his way to a place dubbed Kingsmens Rock. Standing on the highest point that was right at four feet, the kids would sit and wait for their favorite part.
"Remember, this is our secret, okay?"
The young knights would shake their heads vigorously. Their excitement always made the prince grin.
Michael would close his eyes, take a deep breath, and then it would happen. His blonde hair would blend with the flames coming off of the tips, and then sparks would come out of his mouth. No, he wasn't a real dragon, but he was something else. Something better.
Something so magical he could only tell kids about it.
He had been like this since he was born. His mother feared that he would inherit the curse that was set upon her family and she cried for days upon his birth. Her son would have to endure the pain and suffering she saw her own brother go through; he'd have to go through the humiliation of trying to hide his powers. Michael rarely saw it as a curse, however. He could breath fire, he could control water and air, he could make trees grow when he touched them–amongst other things. This was nothing like a curse. It was liberating. It was the most amazing thing that could ever happen to Michael.
The little ones loved to see their prince breathe flames and become something that was just a myth within the kingdoms. However, there was one little girl once who didn't like his flames.
The first time she saw his hair change and the flames come out of his mouth, she burst into tears. Michael stopped immediately, his heart swelling (he never wanted to be scary), and jumped down to comfort her. But she pushed away from him and hid behind her brother who was laughing at her tears. The prince shook his head at the boy and quietly told him to stop, all while grabbing a small clump of dirt. He held it tight in his hands as he closed his eyes and thought about the prettiest flower he could think of. He opened his eyes, unclenched his fist, and watched as the dirt turned into a white rose.
"Tessa," he murmured, "I'm sorry I scared you, I really didn't mean to." She peaked over her brother's shoulder and stared at the flower Michael held in his hands. "I'm not all bad, see? I made this flower just for you. You and your sister pick these for my mother sometimes, don't you?"
The small child moved so she was in front of her brother again. Holding her hand out to touch the flower, she nodded at Michael's question. "You made this?"
