My eyes were on her all the time even when I was conversing with her old classmates. She was just silent while I did most of the talking. I knew she wasn't that comfortable so I wrapped my arm around her waist while a smile was tugging at the corner of my lips. She wouldn't see it but I would glance at her once in a while.
My wife.
Every day, I thank the divine beings for blessing me with a wife like her. Each day with her was like an adventure due to her eccentric personality. On our free days, her nose would often be buried in a novel. If not, we'd both be in the kitchen as she tries something new I've created. With her, everything seemed perfect even if some people think otherwise.
She can't cook.
She has a temper.
Can she even look after herself? How about her household?
I would usually let those comments pass but I do admit that there are days when I think of how tiring it was to have to constantly take care of someone, especially on their bad days. Still, I did my best to adjust. The more time we spent together, the more I learned about the things that made her tick and the things that made her heart melt.
Truthfully, being with her wasn't easy. I could still clearly remember how much my mom nagged me about her inability to cook. She would always tell me that a girl must know their way around the kitchen but I didn't care. I knew how to cook. For me, that was enough for both of us. There have also been times when she'd question my wife's capabilities when it came to household duties. The numerous arguments I had with my mom back in the days would sometimes play in my head. I hated those times but, when I look back to them now, I believe that it was worth the fight because she was able to accept the woman I now call my wife.
Sure, she may not be the best when it came to looking after herself nor she may know her way around household duties. What was important to me was we were both willing to work our way around it.
There were a lot more obstacles that I had to overcome on my own as a person married to her but there were also a lot that we had to overcome as a couple. Even today, there were still a lot of things that we have to face. I thought that as long as we could get over those problems, difficulties, and changes, everything would be fine.
I guess I was fooling myself. As observant as I was when it came to my wife, I wasn't quick to realize how she was changing. I should've seen it instantly. After all, the first thing that changed was what drew me towards her: her expressive eyes.
I remember that day in the coffee shop I used to work at when I was younger. It was the first time I gave her a slice of cake, saying that it was a promo of the café. That was a lie. The cake wasn't on the display because it was something I made myself.
Behind the counter, I was watching her take the first bite. I remember feeling nervous because it might not taste as good for her as it did for me. But then her eyes sparkled and for the first time, I saw a hint of a smile on her lips. It made me giddy. Since then, I've made it an effort to bring her something new that I made for her to eat.
Her eyes spoke for her before her mouth did if you look into them well enough. Initially, people would feel intimidated to approach her because of the aura she emitted. So, when she gave me that glimpse, I wanted to see more of it.
