August 2005

"Damn where the fuck is it?" Michael grumbled, dropping down to his knees and lifting the oversized comforter up. His room was a mess - which wasn't something new, but he irritated himself when he couldn't find something that he needed right then and there.

He pushed boxes out of the way, hoping that it fell down behind the bed and to his luck it did. He grabbed the black metal box and pulled it out from under his bed, smiling at it.

It had been a long and stressful day and he just wanted to smoke a blunt and be left alone for the rest of night and tomorrow he would attempt at going back out and conquering his problems. But for now...

"Mike mother called..." Janet had started to say, opening his bedroom door.

He hissed at her, quickly shutting the metal box he had flipped open onto his lap.

"What's that? Is that what I think it is? I think that's what I think it is."

"Out dunk. Now."

She folded her arms and kissed her teeth. "Don't call me that!"

"Then stop coming in my room unannounced. God gave you two hands - use 'em and knock next time."

"Wow speaking of God when in your lap are the instruments to roll a joint."

Michael - his back against his bed looked up at his twelve-year-old sister, furrowing his eyebrows. "What?"

"You heard me."

"I know I heard you but what I needa know is how did you know what this is?"

Janet never really coward. She had an attitude like a lion and never truly backed down, but for the first time in her life it seemed as if fear had overtaken her.

The big brown eyes that her and Michael shared widened and she shrugged, but Michael caught the hesitancy in her body language.

He tossed the metal box on the bed after closing it and got up from the floor. He was ready to interrogate his little sister until his best friend appeared behind her.

"What?" Michael snapped at him and Janet turned around, startled to see her brother's best friend - and her crush - standing directly behind her.

Her hands were sweaty, so she kept them within the folds of her underarms and leaned against the doorframe to appear unbothered but seen. "'Sup Nick."

He looked down at her, smiling, and her heart pulsated in her chest. An all too familiar feeling swirled around in the depths of her stomach.

"Wassup lil' sis."

She hated when he called her that, but she tried not to show the annoyance in her face. Instead she just held a smile and leaned in for a side hug in which Nick returned.

She knew Nick would never feel or look at her the way she looked at him, but at least being the little sister of his best friend counted for something.
