" Mom, please open the door," Monika pleaded, her voice thick with desperation.
" Monika, just leave me alone," Avantika's voice wavered from the other side.
" You’re my mother. How can I leave you alone?" Monika insisted, tears welling up in her eyes.
" I’m miserable, Monika. I’ll have to leave you one day," Avantika responded, her tone filled with despair.
" Mom..." Monika began, but her plea was interrupted.
" What's going on here? " a voice cut through the tension as someone entered the washroom.
" Nothing," Monika said, trying to compose herself.
" Oh my God! Is that you, Monika Kapoor? " the woman asked, shock evident in her voice. Monika remained silent, avoiding eye contact.
" It is you! What are you doing here? And who’s crying inside? " the woman asked again, her curiosity turning into an annoyance.
" Mind your own business and leave," Monika snapped, frustration seeping into her voice.
" You don't own this place. Did you get that? " the woman retorted, taking offense.
" Yeah, same to you. If you don't have anything to do here, then just get out," Monika replied sharply.
Avantika’s weeping grew louder from inside the stall, amplifying the tension.
" Who is crying? " the woman persisted, further irritating Monika.
" Okay, you just need to get out," Monika said, grabbing the woman's arm and dragging her out of the washroom. She slammed the door shut and locked it, her heart pounding.
Rushing back to the stall, Monika pleaded again, " Mom, please come out. Please, come out before people start gathering. Just come out, Mom, please."
Taking her time Avantika came out after half an hour when she heard people started banging on the door.
" What's going on outside? Why are they banging on the door? " Avantika asked, wiping her tears.
" thank God mom you came out "
Monika sighed in relief and noticed her mother's clothes were bloodstained." this blood? " she asked, panicking again.
" I coughed blood today," Avantika told her with teary eyes.
Monika hugged her tight." Mom Don't worry I won't let anything happen to you "
Avantika nodded
" but you shouldn't have locked this door, now see what have you done"
Monika didn't know how to handle the noise which was coming from outside.
"I will handle everything you just go inside the washroom "
" No, we will go together "
