The weeks following the departure of the soldiers were uneventful and especially painful for you as you grappled with your feelings for John. You paced the Schuyler mansion for hours on end, and even began cooking and cleaning, in hopes to get your mind off of John.
"Nothing is working!" you groaned as you lay on your bed, your head in Angelica's lap. "I'm always thinking about that last moment with him, and if he really cares, he would've sent me a letter. He hasn't said anything or sent anything either!" Angelica patted your (h/c) locks affectionately.
"Be patient, pet," she said. "He'll express his feelings soon enough. If you ask me, I think he's just as nervous as you are. He doesn't know how to properly communicate his affection for you, so he kissed you instead of talking to you. He'll come around soon enough." You sighed and sat up, hugging your knees close to your chest.
"I hope so."

A couple of days later, you were playing piano in the parlour when Eliza burst in. She leaned over and took a huge gasping breath. "Are you alright, Liz?" you exclaimed, running over as you helped her into an armchair.
"I'm fine," she smiled, looking up at you with shining eyes. "I was just at the doctor's, I have some news!"
"What is it? Did he finally figure out why you've been feeling sick the past couple weeks?" you questioned worriedly. "And why your menses hasn't arrived yet?"
"I'm expecting!" beamed Eliza, her hand cupped around her belly.
"W-what?"
"I'm going to have a baby!"
Your jaw dropped. "Oh my..." You hugged Eliza tightly. "That's amazing, Eliza!" She hugged you back and took your hands in hers.
"I'm going to go tell Mother and my sisters, then I'll write to Alex!!" You smiled, helped Eliza up, and walked her upstairs, where she bore the happy news to her family. They showered her with love and support and you stood off to the side, feeling slightly out of place. Here was Eliza, already married and expecting her first child, and you weren't even sure if the man you loved felt the same way. You quickly excused yourself and returned to the piano downstairs, where you rested your head on the keys and let the tears pour down your face.

"ALEX!" cried Eliza as she waved happily at her husband as he came running down the street. She leaped into his arms and they kissed passionately. You watched from the window and turned away as Eliza began chattering excitedly to Hamilton of about her expecting and her plans for their child. A couple minutes later, you heard the front door creak open and rushed to the door to greet your brother-in-law.
"Alexander!" you smiled as you hugged him. "How are you doing?"
"Even better once I learned that I'm going to be a father!" he grinned, his eyes sparkling with joy. "How about you?"
You shrugged and laughed. "Oh, you know me, just doing whatever I can to fill the time." You took a breath and asked, "Did...John say anything about me?"
Alexander paused and pondered the thought for a moment. "Not that I can remember, although he has been spending a lot of time by himself during our off hours."
"Oh." Your shoulders drooped slightly but you still managed to keep a smile on your face. "Let's go see Angelica and Peggy, they're upstairs!" You, Alex and John walked upstairs to meet the other two sisters, who were delighted upon seeing their brother-in-law again. You politely excused yourself and locked yourself in your room, where you tried to contain the heartache and longing that had welled up inside of you. You picked up an open letter you had left lying on the bed and began reading it. John had sent it to you shortly after Alex and Eliza's wedding.
My sweet (Y/N),
I hope that everything is going well with you at the mansion and that the Schuylers are fine as well. I heard it's been much quieter in the house since Eliza has left. Her endless chatter of Hamilton has diminished and the two of them seem very happy together. I will be returning to the war soon and I anticipate the moment I can see you again. Your alluring (e/c) eyes keep me up at night. believe that Alex and Eliza are setting up a luncheon date and we can all reconvene one last time before us men must return to the war. I hope that I will be able to see your beautiful self very soon.
Always in my thoughts,
John Laurens
Your eyes welled up with tears.
I anticipate the moment I can see you again.
Your alluring (e/c) eyes keep me up at night.
It was obvious John had tried to scratch that line out, but you could still read it.
Always in my thoughts.
The tears poured down your cheeks and you pulled your knees together, rocking back and forth in place.
"I miss you, Jack. I need you. Come back to me, please. Please!"
