My grandfather was a staff sergeant for the United States Army and my father was barely a private when he was shot and killed on the battlefield. My mother could barely look me in the face when I told her I was enlisting. She said, "What happens when I lose you too?" She was scared, I know, but it's the right thing to do. The ultimate sacrifice.

She was going to follow in her grandfather and father's footsteps and enlist in the United States Army. Her mother was near tears and seemed to have trouble understanding the words her daughter was saying. Her mother had said, "You're doing what? What happens when I lose you too?" Her daughter tried masking her own fears by saying, "It's what's right, I have to." She wanted to be someone she could be proud of, someone her mom could be proud of and it stung to her to think that her mother may be ashamed to have a child in the service.

Her mother had always feared for the day her daughter would feel the need to join the military just like her father and husband. Her daughter was extremely nervous to have to tell her mother that she wanted to enlist in the Army because she feared she would be hated for it. Her mother was afraid for her but a glint of pride for her daughter's courage shown in her eyes. They were both a little scared but like her grandfather had told her before, "No matter what, fight on. Fight for what you believe, no matter the sacrifice."
