The Culling
Today is the day that most dread, but some look forward to. Today is Culling Day. Today is the day that 17 year old kids from the 20 divisions of enriched life will be chosen to go and hopefully become part of the Premiers. "Premiers?" you may ask, they are the group of people that control who is worthy to keep on our country and who will be deported to the isles. They are pretty much the government of modern times. I have turned 17, the age of all combatants to become a Premier. My name is Callin Edor, son of Premier Johnston Edor. My Dad has extreme expectations of our family. My sister, Samantha, was chosen to become a premier but died in the process. Just like the three hundred and four others that were chosen. Only nine people have survived the Process of Induction, over the many years of Culling Ceremonies.
"Are you ready?" my mother said.
"Ready as ever Mom."
"Boys! It's time to go you know!" My two older brothers ran into the room swatting and slapping each other.
"It's time to go?" my brother Mark whispered.
"Yes," Mom replied in a hushed tone.
We then walked out the door and traveled the 3 mile trip to the square where the Premiers will announce the new tributes to come to the Embassy to be trained and tested. I've always wished that my father would come to my culling, but he has never come to any of my siblings.
We arrive at the Square and the Intendant of our colony, Thomas Colony, congratulates us for making it to the Culling.
"We are so excited to have two of our young residents being chosen for the Induction!"
Some gasped, others screamed, while some cheered. My mother and I looked
at each other and she mouthed, "I love you."
"We will be having Samuel Torne and Madelyn Freem coming to the Indu-"
His words were cut short as a bullet flew through the air, nicking Sam in the ear. He looks at his ear in disbelief for a split second until another bullet flies into his heart.
"No!" I screeched. Sam had always been my best friend and fellow classmate.
There were gasps as Sam fell off the stage into the fountain below us, staining the water within a dark red. His mother ran to him while sobbing and saying unintelligible words sputtered by her tears.
"Since Sam can no longer participate in the Induction, we will have Callin Edor take his place." said the Intendant, calmer than he should have, "Will our tributes please come to the stage."
For a moment I don't realize that he has called my name until Madi came over and grabbed my hand with a faint smile. I walk to the stage slowly, with every single person staring at me and Madi. I stand next to her and go to say something but am interrupted by the massive loud screech of the microphone.
"Callin and Madi will have ten minutes to pack and say their goodbyes to their family." The Intendant motioned for us to go to our families swiftly and whispered a small sorry to us.
I run as fast as I can to my mother, wrapping myself into her warm embrace. I stutter some jumbled words which wouldn't have made sense even if they were clear. My mother said three words, "I'll miss you." I run back to the house with the packing list given to me and pack as fast as possible. I am allowed to take one personal item with me. I grab my Mom's journal to read while I am in the Culling. My mother tells me not to read pages 7-11. Of course, I am going to read them.
