Trigger Words Aren't A Joke

Important to know; User A is the one who made the post I'm describing, User B is the user that user a is talking about in their post. The reason I'm making this post is because it's important to educate people like User A so that people like User B don't get hurt (when they've already been hurt enough). I also understand what it's like to have people not take you or your triggers seriously, and it sucks (understatement of the century).

I saw a vent today on DeviantArt where User A went on and on about how they called User B "dear" in a comment they left on one of their artworks and User B replied and asked them not to call them "dear" because it upset them. User A made the comment "it was only a pet name, how on earth could a pet name be 'offensive'?" in their vent and I'd just like to make my own post about how wrong they are.

First off, "offensive" isn't the right word to use for this situation. User B was not offended, they were upset, there's a difference. Secondly, "triggering" could replace the word "offensive" and yes pet names can be triggering for some. Triggers are triggers, it doesn't matter if it's a certain phrase, smell, or even a pet name.

Sadly terms/phrases like "trigger word", "triggered", and "triggering" aren't taken seriously but the meanings behind them are extremely serious. For example, a trigger word is a word that when heard it produces an unwanted feeling. This feeling could be anything from getting mysteriously sad or irrationally angry to having a full blown panic attack from fear.

Here's a scenario for you if you still don't get it (molestation trigger warning): A little girl lays in her bed being touched by her father in ways I refuse to describe. Her father whispers disgusting sweet nothings to her, he repeats phrase like "you're doing so well sweetie", "I love you sweetie", "keep quiet sweetie", etc.

Now years later she's a grown women and every time someone calls her sweetie she is taken back to that sick memory. What if you were this women and had to relive this memory every time someone decided that trigger words were "stupid" or "made up" and ignored your warnings?
