I tiptoed as fast as I dared without making the faintest sound on the creaky floorboards in the horrid attic to eavesdrop on our rival team's lord - King Orik. Being the most experienced spy of our team, my lord - Galbatorix had sent me to acquire knowledge about King Orik's army and his game plan for the war. I had managed to reach till the attic, but after that, the putrid odor of rotting cheese, millennia old wine bottles, uncared, trapped and dead rats wafted through the air. The unbearable, pungent smell was threatening to faint me by the time I reached the war room of King Orik where he and his comrade-in-arm - Curser (as his nickname had become)were talking in the faintest whisper.
I pinched my nose in disgust and hid in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to sneak in the room. Just when the duet looked away, I oiled the door hinges, picked the lock with my knife and ever so quietly slipped inside sinking into the shadows formed by the overhang.
"-do not wish to wage war with Galbatorix. We will not be able to win. We are hopeless. I hope in our next and maybe final meeting, we will be able to call a cease fire preventing bloodshed." said Orik meekly.
"Don't trust him. Keep a backup plan if he does not agree to cease fire. He will see for only for his own good. " said Curser truthfully.
"All these lives lost to regain our rightful wealth and property just for more thousands of deaths." sobbed Orik.
"I suggest, we shall apply different tactics this time. Let's not go straight into battle, instead we shall lay a trap. Let's fortify the city and build war machines. This time we shall win and overpower that notorious, high headed, cruel and intolerant king." breathed Curser in his cold voice with a winning grin on his face.
"Yeah Yeah, whatever." said Orik in a bored voice.
This made me yell and I exposed myself. All stared each other in utter shock and nobody reacted for a few minutes. Curser came out from this sudden unexpected trance and surprisingly in calm voice asked me to tell what all had I heard threatening me at edge of the knife.
With all my guts collected, I decided to tell the truth. After much threatening, chastising and understanding I saw the truth and agreed to work on their side.
I went back to Galbatorix and fed him information that would lead him into a trap. A few days before the final war started, I was made the comrade-in-arm of Orik. This change of heart was a great help to King Orik. My true identity was not discovered until the war began. Amid the midst of battle, my initial lord found out my true identity.
"You foolish traitor" thundered Galbatorix. "I curse in the name of god. I am going to kill you. I swear it on my name and power. I swear it on my good right hand." screamed Galbatorix like a drunken madman.
"There will be no need to slay me personally." I returned calmly. "Didn't you realize that you are surrounded and no one will escape? And well you're the evil one here and blah blah I know all..." I said in a bored voice.
He just stared at me wide-eyed in utter disbelief.
After all fates were decided, I was offered a high position to be in King Orik's court whom many sought after and a lot of wealth (which went without saying) but of course work wasn't completed! Defenses were to be righted and preparation for sieges to be readied and stocked and an endless list of works to be done for the city.
