Shiru Nara was a very bright little girl, she had never been full of energy, and most thought that was why she hadn't graduated at the same age as Hatake Kakashi.

Some people sneered and said no one from the Nara could become as skilled as Hatake had been, as Hatake was. It was insulting in the least.

Shiru had taken what they said to heart, she held herself tall and frowned when she heard people talking down about her clan.

They were lazy yes, but they were geniuses, so they were allowed to have breaks.

Shiru's lips pursed as she heard whispers of how lazy her clan was, she would show them, she would show them that she could be lazy like her clan but still come out a prodigy in the end!

Shiru's self promise made her plead to go to the academy early. Though it was more of a; 'can I go?', then pleading. But in a Nara's eyes that's pretty pleading.

Maybe it was a mistake to ask to join early? Shiru thought, glancing around in a slight wonder while keeping her eyes half lidded and her back slumped. Everyone in the class was twice her age, maybe she should leave?

And then a boy walks in, a boy her age with looks and clothes that screamed Uchiha, and his shoulders seemed to sag in relief when he caught sight of a kid, of her, his age.

He doesn't smile when he sits down, he simply 'hns' and says his name.

The girl yawns lazily and introduces herself.

They become friends that day even if Shiru never agreed to such a thing. She didn't need friends, she always thought.

Their sensei arrived and the lesson proved to be boring, and something Shiru had read about before. So she sleeps, while Itachi is shocked when she is able to answer a question after being woken up. She hadn't listened to a single thing their sensei said and yet-

He opted to read instead of train that night.

It was after school, and Shiru was walking home, when Itachi somehow shyly comes up to her with a nervous face. He looks at her, directly into her eyes, and asks, "do you want to go get some dango? I have some time before going back home."

Shiru couldn't say no to that face she'd already grown accustomed to in this fateful day. So she nodded, and Itachi's pride seemed to rise and his eyes were wide in hope. He grabbed her pale hand and dragged her around the village.

She was his first friend. He could be himself around her. He could tell her all of his worries and not have to hope she wouldn't tell anyone.

From that day on, they were inseparable, no matter how Shiru would deny it.

"Father! I made a friend at the academy today!" Exclaimed Itachi rather happily to his father and mother who'd happened to be in the living room when the child had entered. For once, the two were surprised.

Their son? Said to be one of the most collected and smart child prodigies made a friend? They doubted the friend was his age, but something told them they were.

"And...who is this friend you speak of?" Fugaku asked curiously. He hoped it wasn't someone of bad influence on his eldest son.

"Her name's Shiru Nara! She's my age, too!" The six year old said giddily, strutting back to his room after a kiss to his 1 year old brother, Sasuke's, forehead. He had a friend!

Itachi didn't know how betrayed she'd feel later on in life. And how his leaving would change not only her, but the world too.
