CHAPTER ONE - Sal's Diner
"People need fear to survive. We experience it so we can grow stronger."
Friday.
At seven thirty-five A.M a bus pulls into a stop in the heart of a new city. Me- Leslie Gillian am fast asleep, having been on the bus for hours that day with nowhere to go or no one to see I caught a bus with the little amount of money I had on me. The bus driver walked up to me,
"Miss? This is our last stop for the night." He said. I was still tired from the travel and didn't understand at first but quickly caught one then left. With no idea where I was, I started wondering about the area. I found a 24-hour Diner then went in to see two girls arguing behind the counter,
"Hurry up Cali~ we're going to be late for school if you don't hurry up!" The Blonde girl said. "Alright, Alright! Alli! I'll be right there just wait a second." The brunette replied. I'm guessing their names are Cali and Alli. The blonde notices me and starts to speak.
"Oh! Sorry, I didn't see you come in. My names Allison- I work here. Although the waitress on duty isn't here yet. But I can put your order in before I take off." Allison says. Then I reply with,
"Oh no worries I'm just looking. But is there anyone I can talk to about a job opening?" I say hesitantly knowing it was probably no use.
"Um- maybe? I don't know let me check in with my boss. One second." she says while motioning for me to wait. Then when she heads into the back room of the Diner I hear her yell,
"Sal! There's some girl here who wants a job!" Afterwards, a middle-aged man who looks to be in his early forties comes to greet me.
"Good morning miss, so you would like a job here?" He says while looking at me.
"Yeah, I would. See I'm new to town and I really need a job if I wanna continue... ya know living." I say jokingly while still anxious. The two girls leave in high school uniforms.
"Great! I'll just need you to fill out a few forms telling me some of your information such as your phone number and address and we will be one our way." He says to me while handing me a clipboard and pen. I reply with,
"I don't really have a place to stay or a phone at the moment... that's. uh, kinda why I need a job." I say hesitantly knowing this could lower my chances of getting the job. Then he says
"It's kinda important for me to have that information in case of a shift change."
After he says that I know I have no chance of getting a job here, yet I still fight for it knowing I shouldn't give up on what I want.
"Please! I could be here whenever you need as long as you tell me to! I could be here an hour early every day if you'd like!" I say trying to fight for a chance.
"Hmm, we really don't need any more waitresses but Kate is always late so..." He says before being interrupted by the bell of the door and the back of the door hitting the wall. A lady, clearly intoxicated walks in.
"I-I'm here Sal, I-m sorry my car broke down on the... The road. yeah- y'know." She says.
"Your hired... you start Monday." He says to me. After hearing that I was ecstatic. I begin to thank him.
"Thank you so much Mr.Sal!" I pretty much scream at him.
"Hehe- just call me Sal." He says before going to his wall phone to call the police on Kate."Oh-Shit." Kate says before immediately running out.
After getting a job at the Diner Mr.Sal Mccae gave me my schedule and I was on my way. I had to show up Monday to Friday from 7 AM to 3 PM- and there was also the fact that I gave my word to show up an hour early so 6 AM to 3 PM. Which means I had to work 9 hours a day, Oh boy...
Anyways, after getting the job I still needed money for the days to come so with my Ukulele I had packed in my bag I started to busk near the Diner, gaining around 20 dollars in loose change before the sun started to set and most places were starting to close. A young guy around my age walked into Sal's diner, he had a computer bag with what seems to look like his school work in it along with a grey laptop. I followed him in, having made some money from busking I used it to pay for my first meal of the day. The girl I had met this morning was on duty for this evening. She serves the guy who came in shortly before me then comes to me, She says:
