The only boys that were in her head are her twin brothers, Upin and Ipin, and their friends. They were annoying enough, always getting on her nerves and that's enough for her. No other boys could enter Ros's little world except those kindergarten kids. The guys that were the same age or older are too scared to get close to her since she's a hot-head and wouldn't mind landing a punch on anybody. Thus, the 6-year old children are the only boys she ever cared.

She never had any crushes nor conflict with the boys at school. She doesn't even bother to have friends with boys unless they approach her and she decides that it's beneficial to do so. Salleh, or Sally, only became friends with her just because sometimes Opah tells her to run errands which involves him. Sally is too weird and girly for Ros's taste.

But then, when her grandmother brought her a smartphone for her 17th birthday, Ros never knew that her life as an ordinary village girl  would gradually change.

"Ros, come here," Opah said the night on her birthday. Upin and Ipin was fast asleep in their bedroom. The elderly woman was sitting on a rattan chair in the living room when Ros went to her.

Opah took something from the side of the chair and placed it on her lap. Ros looked at it, a box carefully wrapped in pink with a cute purple bow on top. The teen felt her heart leap in her chest, it's her birthday gift!

"Take it," Opah held out the box. "- it's your gift. Happy birthday, Ros."

Ros takes it gratefully with a smile. "Thank you, Opah."

She unwraps the gift and underneath the paper was a white box. Not completely white, there's an image of a phone.... Ros squealed with excitement and Opah worried for a moment that she might faint from joy.
"It's an Iphone 6s!" Ros said. Opah sees tears in the girl's eyes and she knew she's done the right thing. "Oh, thank you Opah!!" She hugged her grandmother, careful not to crush the old woman's bones.

Before Ros could ask and go on a guilt trip, Opah quickly explained. "Well, your current phone is years behind from what your peers currently have. So, I save up money for you."

"That's why you went to the city two weeks ago."

"Yes, and it's all for the girl that I love." Opah said, and received a kiss on the cheek.

Ros assumed that smartphones are a method to  gain information and be more open-minded. - It seems like Internet has more surprises than she expected. Ros learns about Western culture and she's in a great culture shock for a moment.

In the Internet, as far as Ros had learnt, people mostly cared about beauty, gossip and fame. Western lifestyle is so much different than Malaysians, that is until she downloaded Instagram. She's surprised to find out Malaysians are beginning to be influenced by that lifestyle. She's downloaded plenty of social platforms but doesn't bother to touch Tik Tok. - She sees it... cringy. Yes, another word Ros had learnt via Internet.

On Instagram, Ros gained followers just by posting pictures of her and her life in a village. She doesn't mind how much followers she has and right now her follower count is heading towards 3k. She's careful enough not to expose all about herself, something she quickly learnt on the newspaper's celeb gossip section.

News about Ros having an Iphone became wide-spread in the village. Her friends at school even followed her on Ig including the boys who finally found a way to approach her. They never expected their 'Perempuan Melayu Terakhir' (a girl who upholds traditional ways) became a modern teen. The whole village talked about it, but are too scared to actually blurt it out to her in case she might suddenly turn them into a punching bag.

"Kak Ros, can we play on your phone for a while?" asked Upin and Ipin in chorus. They sometimes borrow their sister's phone to play Candy Crush, the only app Ros allowed them to download and to use.
